Hi all!

I am new to exploring Bariatric surgery and have my initial appointment tomorrow. I’ve struggled with my weight since I was a young child and am now thirty. At my current weight of 293 pounds, and my height, I have a BMI of 54.5 and multiple co morbidities. I suffer from Type II diabetes, obesity hypoventilation syndrome, sleep apnea, hypertension, high cholesterol, tachycardia, arthritis, and acid reflux. My mobility is significantly impacted and I get winded very easily. At thirty I have already had a TIA about a month ago and have been told I’m at high risk of another event or cardiac event. I don’t want to die and want my life back but no matter what diet I’ve tried it’s failed. I don’t know yet what procedure is best for me but I feel like this is my last chance to save my life. I’m here for support and education!

Welcome and congrats on taking the first step! The people here are amazingly helpful and nice. Personally, I read through just about every day to learn as much as possible and help keep myself focused. And I swear I learn something new almost every day!

Welcome to the site and congratulations on the beginning of your journey! I was 31 when I started my journey, 32 when I had my surgery, and now I'm 33 at 9 months post-op. I only wish I'd done it sooner! I had the Loop Duodenal Switch surgery (also called SIP-S) and if you are exploring all types of surgeries and if you get curious about the Loop DS please don't hesitate to ask and I'll tell you about my own personal experience with the surgery. Do all the research you can and find the right surgery for YOU! (though personally, I think Gastric Bypass looks the best at first glance because of your acid reflux. VSG isn't the best option because of that and my surgery has a sleeved stomach... but in the end it's very much a personal choice and very much up to you) I wish you the best!

your surgeon will go over the options with you and will let you know if there is a specific surgery that is more appropriate for you given your health/medical needs. If he/she says they have no concerns and that you're a good candidate for any type of surgery, then spend a lot of time reading up on the different surgeries to make your decision easier. They all have their pros and cons. This site is a great place to start!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
