Whats does the hospital give for the gas ?

Recommended Posts

Hi ,

Having gastric bypass on the 31st woot!

Was wondering what medication they give in the hospital to help with the gas pain?

Everyone is talking about gas X but I live in the UK so. Was thinking chewable pepto bismol might help.

Thoughts?

The absolute best thing is to walk as much as you can. It really helps move that gas out!

Agreed!! A lot of the gas you feel post op isn't inside your stomach (therefore stomach meds can't get to it), but is rather from them pumping you up with gas to do the surgery.

Agreed, walk walk walk. Before going in I made a commitment to myself that anytime someone asked me I would get up and walk. And that I would try anytime they came to change meds, etc.... I ended up walking every 2 hours or so (starting with just one lap around the ward) and my pain was pretty well managed.

I have to say I really felt like crap the first 2 days in the hospital. I vomited several times and had a lot of nausea, but I up and walked as much as possible, and had very minimal pain.
I'm actually a nurse (sahm now), and I can tell you the patients who do the best are the ones who get up as soon as possible after surgery and walk, walk, walk!
Good luck to you on your surgery!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
