Hey! I have surgery next Wednesday 10/28 and my doctor isn't prescribing me any meds for after I live the hospital. Did anyone else have this happen? Hopefully if I'm in a lot of pain before discharge he will change that.

That seems unusual. I have had 2 bariatric surgeries and both times was given not only pain meds, but also prescription stomach meds/acid reducers and anti-nausea medications. Are you having surgery in the US?

Yes, surgery in the US. He only prescribed meds to prevent acid reflux after surgery

It may not be your Doc's practice to prescribe or discuss post-op meds until... post-op. He may want to have a sense of what happened during the surgery, and also see how your feel after.

Good luck,

Tek

That's true! I can see that with people having addictions to pain medicine. Thank you!

For your peace of mind, you can always ask your surgeon about the plan for pain management once you leave the hospital. I kind of grilled my surgeon about that during our pre-op appointment because I wanted to be sure we were on the same page. I asked about the primary plan and also asked what we would do if that didn't work. And Dr. Zare explained both his planned initial approach and a fallback plan in case we needed it (which we did, eventually). You should be able to go into surgery understanding what to expect and I've never met a surgeon who wasn't willing to answer this question (I've had a bunch of surgeries over the years).

How long will you be in the hospital? I was supposed to be in the hospital for two nights, in which case, I probably would not have needed pain meds. But it turned out (thank you, COVID) that I was outpatient and needed pain meds until Day 3. And I agree, speak to your surgeon about pain management post surgery.

My surgeon didn't prescribe anything until after my surgery. He called in the prescriptions before I was discharged and I picked them up on my way home. I hardly needed any of them (besides the acid blocker). Didn't touch the pain meds.

Same for me. I didn't get any prescriptions until my surgeon saw me for my release from the hospital. I ended up with Percocet, Ursodiol, and Lovenox. Was also told to take Prilosec, but that's OTC. Didn't use the percoset at all and was told to stop the lovenox at my 2 week post op.

I will be there for one night. I will speak with him; thank you!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
