Hi from UK (new ) , liver shrink diet

Recommended Posts

Hello , just found this site and wanted to say hi . Is there many on here from the UK ? Any area of the forum I should be in ?

I'm due to have surgery on 27th October ( fingers crossed ) by the NHS.

I'm on the liver shrinkage diet now and wondered if I'm only getting 500 to 600 cal a day, would that be an issue ? My nurse advised a 600 cal diet but when the booklet came it said 800 and online it seems to be more 800 and over

Kind regards

My pre-op diet was mostly liquids, with a couple of servings of fruits or veggies each day for a week. I could have 5 Protein Shakes a day, which would be 800 calories plus maybe 150 calories for the fruit or veggies. So maybe 800 to a 1000 per day. Go by what your book says and stick to that. Some days I could only manage 3 shakes, some days I had 5. My liquid diet also allowed sugar free popsicles and other liquids which helped too.

Hi thank you for the reply , I'm finding it easy enough to follow but was concerned that having under the amount of cal it suggests would pose a different problem to having too many

Thanks again

Hi 🙋‍♀️ I'm also in the UK and my RNY bypass surgery is this Thursday (22nd)! My liver shrinkage diet is between 800-1000 calories and I've been on it for just over 2 weeks already. I'm having the op privately - very difficult to get it on the NHS in my area - but my dietitian provides the same pre-op diet for NHS and private patients. It's not Protein shakes; she gives a full diet plan which includes specific amounts of protein, fruit, veg and carbs. She said quite specifically not to go below 800 calories at this stage.

I found it hard to stick to the 800-1000 cal limit when including all the carbs she put in so dropped some of them, and have also decided from today to go onto liquid (protein shakes) for the last 3 days.

I think all plans are different but tailored to the patient? My pre-op diet is usually for 2 weeks but I was put onto it 4 days early as apparently I have a "fatty liver", so there may be a specific reason why your nurse told you 600 calories a day. You could ring/email them?

Good luck!

Hi,

Not from the UK but both of my pre-op diets were 600-800 calories and consisted of 4 Protein Shakes a day along with celery and cucumbers. I was also allowed to have up to 2 cups of broth a day and as much Water, plain tea and coffee as I wanted. No popsicles or sugar free Jello on mine.

Thanks for the info , it was all a bit rushed as I've been on the waiting list but suddenly made priorty . My nurse didn't know I had a surgery date until I told her and at that point we were 14 days away ! So she gave advise over the phone and then sent out the booklets .

Thank you .

The nurse advised 3 pints of skimmed milk and unlimited jelly , suger free drinks ( this was because she had to start me on the diet as the op date was only 14 days away when she found out I was having it ). She then sent the booklets ,When the booklet came it has food options so I've reduced the milk and incorporated grilled chicken . I have been monitoring the intake on my fitness pall to ensure I'm matching the quantities advised in the book but I'm concerned my cal is to low but seems ok with what you've just said so I'll stop worrying as much

There's a surprising amount of variation in pre-op diets from one surgeon to the next. If you follow what yours says, you'll be fine. But generally speaking, there shouldn't be much concern about going a little lower in calories than your plan allows. I got about 500-600 calories per day during my pre-op diet and didn't have any issues.

Thanks for all your help anyway

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
