3.5 weeks post op - first dumping experience

Recommended Posts

Happy Sunday Everyone! Just wanted to get some advice and see if anyone has had a similar experience. I dumped tonight for the first time and man oh man was it unpleasant. Pretty much felt like my body evacuated all stored or working to pass BM’s. It was a wild experience. My stomach hurt suddenly so I went to the bathroom. Then my mouth started watering like I was about to vomit (thankfully that passed) I was wearing my apple watch and my heart rate spiked from 58 resting to 95bpm. I started shaking uncontrollably. such a strange experience. It has since passed but i’m worried it will happen again. 3 hours prior I had eaten a 1/3 of a banana. 1 hour prior I had high Protein almond crackers with hummus. all chewed very well and without a drink. Has anyone had a similar experience with these foods? I don’t think it was the banana but any insight is appreciated. Good news is I feel cleaned out... lol. Hope everyone enjoys the rest of their sunday!

The EXACT same thing happened to me after having a half banana in my smoothie- the surgeon said it would be okay to try. Since then, I have really watched my sugar intake. I do not want to go through that again......

Yikes, good to know... I’ve been contemplating trying a banana (I really want to try banana “ice cream”), but hesitated because of the sugar content. I don’t want to take any chances, so maybe I’ll keep avoiding bananas.

I dumped a couple weeks post RNY revision with a Protein Shake. I’ve also dumped on eggs. I don’t have any experience with bananas because I developed an allergy a few years ago but I do miss them.

I really wanted to have the bypass and I was upset that it was contraindicated for me (due to unrelated medical issues). But I must say, dumping sounds awful so maybe it worked out for the best!

Dumping is no fun. Which is why I'm glad I dump.

Do you think the folks above that dumped on sugar (or fat) want to repeat the event? What better negative reinforcement for eating wrong things could you ask for?

Yep, dumping helped me get where I am today.

I dumped on eggs...both in Soup (egg drop) and scrambled. I have since had a hard boiled egg, but only while I'm home!

I am two weeks out from surgery. I dumped for the first time Sunday (Nov 1) after my morning medication and some swigs of sugar free Powerade. It was god awful. I thought I was dying.

I had an episode of SVT (of which I have a history that started long before surgery) with heart rate in the 160s, then my bowels got super loose all of a sudden. I got lightheaded and dizzy and I thought I was going to pass out. I broke out into a cold, clammy sweat. Then I dry heaved for a few minutes.

The dry heaving made it click for me that it was dumping. I was surprised to have that happen on a basically empty stomach. I hadn't had any issues before, but I guess I just took my pills too fast and it freaked my body out. I have been more careful with how fast I take my pills since and I haven't had that issue... but it was scary. I really did not expect it.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
