Horrible GERD episode last night

Recommended Posts

Last night I woke up choking from acid back up and even threw up a little. Throat on fire and still have nasty taste in my mouth no matter how many times I brush and swish around listerine. I also am wheezing and go no sleep after fear of it happening again. I had revision from vsg to DS (9.17.20)and never suffered from this before but since the revision, this has been an issue(not as scary as last night).I have chewable antacids that helped little but boy was this scary.

Only chewable antacids? Nothing more effective on a script? Perhaps its time to see your surgeon or doctor. In the meantime are you sleeping on an incline? It may help along with ensuring no food 2 to 3 hours before bed.

Did your Surgeon send you home with a prescription for a PPI? I believe it is fairly common even after revisions to still take them for a few weeks during the healing phase

You definitely need something stronger than an over the counter antacid. Like Greentealael, I’m surprised your surgeon didn’t prescribe you something from after your surgery either.

Reflux/gerd can be a complication from sleeve. And yes, that burning in your throat & evil taste in your mouth from your stomach acids rising up is awful.

I take 20mg Nexium everyday. My surgeon told me I’d always have to take one every day. I had stress induced reflux before surgery & had been prescribed Nexium, to take as required, by my GP years ago.

Hey! How are you feeling now? I’m going through something similar and it’s horrible!

I went to the drug store and got some omeprazole and that has been helping tremendously. I've also propped myself up a little more higher as well when I sleep and increased fluids. Still waiting to hear back from my doctors office too!

So glad it’s been helpful. Watch when propping yourself up in bed that you don’t put a bend at the base of your throat as acid can pool there & do damage. Years ago I used to put bricks under the top of my bed - it helped heaps. Some people swear by using a wedge to sleep on.

My doctor said I needed omneprezole for at least 6 months after surgery. You can buy otc Prilosec/omneprezole. Make sure to take 2 pills to equal 40mg. It can get pricey buying otc. See if your doctor will write a script for it. With my insurance, I paid $5 for a 3 month supply.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
