Having trouble getting surgery date!

Recommended Posts

I’m 31 and I weigh over 400 odd and I’m having trouble getting surgery date because my BMI is so high. I’ve been on this journey since 2017. I’ve been on steroids due to a lung condition. I’m miserable and don’t know what to do!

What exactly is the problem? There are others who weigh more and who have had surgery. Do you have some risk factors that disqualify you for surgery? Please tell us more.

I was diagnosed with Sarcoidosis and you are correct being on steroids was a contributing factor. My pulmonary doctor cleared me for surgery but by that time I was on steroids for so long I gained a lot of weight and put me out of bounds for BMI goal. I stopped taking my steroids at the beginning of this pandemic. I kind of stopped going to my bariatric appointments just tired of hearing no or I can’t. They replaced my nurse practitioner also so my new was the one that kind of created more obstacles for me. I’ve been depressed for awhile because I basically went through everything and a year plus later I still have no date and will probably have to start over.

Welcome to the forums.

Most test for surgery are only good for 6 months or so it was back when I did it. So resolve that you are basically going to have to start over. As such, if your current Doc is anxious about your high BMI then now would be the time to look for a Doc that is not scared, that can do the surgery with your other issues. You're the boss, make sure you hire a surgeon that can do the job for you. Shop around.

This will be a lot of frustrating stuff to get to surgery. You need to just do it. Insurance doesn't want you to have surgery as it costs them money, so they will put things in your way hoping you quit. Surgeons are risk averse. They don't want to do surgery if there's a chance it could kill you. It makes sense, if you think about it. Again, find the Doc willing to do it.

This is not a sprint it's a marathon. Just keep plugging away. Knock down anything in your path and keep moving forward. You don't cross the finish line by quitting.

Good luck,

Tek

Thank you. I figured I’d have to start over but I’m up for the challenge. I just need to do my part and not accept no for an answer. I’m very hopeful. Thank you for the response.

I can tell from my husband's experience.. He also had some troubles before the surgery itself and he was about to give up but I told him to not even think about. You cannot leave that big and hard road behind you just because a minor obstacle right before the final result! So, he believed in himself and had the surgery with positive thoughts only! Afterwards we had a long road of recovery with the help of https://kitodiet.me/ as he was on the Keto diet. All in all, your thoughts are real and they affect the reality, so be as positive as possible!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
