Anyone go into surgery alone?

Recommended Posts

I am just wondering if anyone had surgery alone with no family/friends there with you on surgery day? I am getting nervous about my upcoming surgery and won’t have anyone there at all. Is that really out of the ordinary? Will my surgeon and the nurses think it’s odd? Will I be okay without that moral support? Or am I worrying for nothing?
Unfortunately I did i was nervous at first but because of covid that just the precautions you'll do just fine [emoji846]

They can tell you this all day long and most people just go along with it because “doctors” but you’re not in prison, they cannot confine you against your will. Worst case scenario they ask you to sign a waiver, but they can’t even force that. If they feel you’re a danger to others driving they can call the police on you but again they cannot legally confine you (there are exceptions for psych evaluation of course but that’s not what we’re talking about here). I had to do it once... “am in in custody?” “No.” “Bye.”

You just have to sign a form that you are leaving against medical advice. Be wary that it gets noted in your medical record though and later on when you need something like home health services they may reject you as a patient because of previous noncompliance.

I had c-section twice so I thought I could handle the op and it couldn't be worse than c-section, but no! This was different :)

Ozzy3434 can you tell me more about how it was different? Ive had two c sections as well and still in early stages of this process was it more painful than the csections? Or was it about the same just in a different area?

I went to Mexico got mine and I was alone, in fact my family and friends still don’t know. You’ll do great. When you’re ready to go take an Uber or Lyft there and back home. Go shopping for what you’ll need before the procedure.

You went to Mexico? Can you tell me more about it? Which surgeon did you go to? How long ago did you have it done? I am considering going to Mexico myself and I don’t even want to tell my family and friends about it. Maybe just on friend and that’s all. I have to pay out of pocket and can’t afford $15000. Sorry, so many questions! Thank you!

My wife had to home school our oldest the day of my surgery so I drove myself in at 5am. Later that day she got a ride to the hospital to see me in my room and then drove my car home. I didn't see her at all the next day until that night when she picked me up following my discharge. I was able to have my phone with me right up until they took me to the OR so I mostly kept myself amused with that, but I also have plenty of nurses and the anesthesiologist coming in to check on me or give me things so it wasn't bad and not one person asked me about being there alone.

That's a great question. I'm curious too as I'm in a similar situation.

I had to go in alone w/covid. My friend dropped me off and visited me that day (we were allowed 1 visitor at a time, and they had to wear a mask and stay in the room) and another friend picked me up. I put my brother down as the contact bc I knew he would answer his phone to an unknown number before my parents. I also had my phone in the waiting area.. they let me have it right up until I was wheeled back. It helped me a lot..

I was fine without people.. I did my pre-op journey alone so I felt it was symbolic to do my surgery alone as well. And the nurses and staff didn't say anything.. and I'd ask if you can have your phone so you can be connected to your support system.

I went in alone and did fine. I am single and didn't want to make anyone sit there waiting on me plus the hospital was 1.5 hrs from where I live. I had my brother drop me off and pick me up since I couldn't drive and the hospital was great with calling my brother telling him everything that was happening. I would definitely keep a phone near you for boredom or maybe something on audible. I wish you the best and if you get nervous, feel free to post on the forums....there's usually always someone on to reply.

I went alone and I didn’t even have energy or want to even call anyone until 10 or so hours after so let everyone know you’ll reach out when you can

My husband dropped me off and the door and picked me up at the door the next day. I sent him texts until they took me back and then afterwards I slept so much it was actually nice being alone. Lol.

I had surgery 10 years ago. My daughter dropped me off. She was 18 years old and in college. The Doctor's office had someone there "for me" pre op, and she drove me nuts. I asked her to step outside of the room and asked the nurse to make her leave. OR I would. She wouldn't shut up. The nurses laughed and agreed. I told the surgeon that if she showed up afterwards I could not be held responsible for my actions. I slept alot after surgery and walked when I could.

My 80 year old father picked me up two days later. We stayed in a local hotel since I was 2 hours from home and the surgeon wants me local for one more day. I heated up pre made clear broth in hotel microwave. Dad went out to the local coffee shop for meals. I walked around the hotel. Dad drove me home. I would have been fine if there had been Uber then !!!

Yes, I was alone on surgery day. My middle brother, who was going to be there that morning, had a heart attack four days before my surgery. Everybody else was working. My niece drove me to the hospital.

The pre and post op nurses were great. The pre-op nurses were very kind and supportive, especially when they learned I was there alone.

The morning after my surgery I ran into another of my surgeon's patients I'd met at the last pre-op class and had also connected with in an online support group run by our surgeon's practice. We were both in the same hallway for our leak tests. Lol Our nurses rolled our beds near each other. Later that day, she came to my room for our pre-discharge class with our practice's nurse.

Does your surgeon have a support group? Maybe you can find out if you have a "surgery twin".

I'm sending you good vibes for your surgery day.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
