What all would prevent you from getting approved?

Recommended Posts

So I am right around the 40 bmi cut off. I have been doing my research on all of this, and am looking for more and all possibilities on what could prevent you from getting approved? Like do you need to stay above a 40 bmi up until your surgery? Or just show your nutritionist or surgeon you were at a 40 bmi at least once seeing them? Any and all other possibilities are appreciated to hear about as well. Thanks

Once you have your first surgeons consultation, your weight will be recorded. They will encourage you to diet and lose weight in preparation for surgery. It isn't common for people to be disqualified for losing weight prior to surgery. A restrictive liquid diet will produce great results. Losing weight will make your surgery quicker and safer since the liver's size will decrease. Also, some insurance plans approve at 35 BMI with a condition such as acid reflux, diabetes, or high blood pressure.

I'm just above the 40BMI and was concerned about this as well. My Patient Coordinator said the same as California Guy. My first appointment with my Surgeon was after my 6-months of documented loss with my PCP. Just to ensure it wouldn't be an issue- I've stayed at the same BMI; as soon as I'm approved, I will lose all I can to shrink my liver to have the best opportunity for a smooth surgery.

Best of luck to you!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
