Post Band Blues

Recommended Posts

Is anyone else experiencing any post banding blues? I have been crying on and off now for two days for no apparent reason. Physically I feel great and have been very successful with my weight loss so far.

Hope someone can help.

Could it be something else going on that you are atributing to the band?

And yes, I've been super sad on days because of the how my life has changed. Food's role has changed for me and most of the time I see that as a good thing but there are days when I miss the comfort it could offer.

The sadness will pass. Try to think of positive things that have changed for you. And see if there is something deeper going on that's making you sad too.

OhJuli could be hitting on something--there COULD be something else that's also causing the upset.

The holidays are here and my main focus was always food--from Thanksgiving on through New Years. What kind of yummy food can I make/have/take somewhere?!!!

Now that yummy food is off limits and not just temporarily (we're not just on a "diet" anymore)--it's forever. At Thanksgiving, I put smidgens of everything on my plate, but I KNEW I could only eat very little--perhaps it was just the idea that it was on my plate. :hungry:

I found myself in the grocery store today looking at the carbs and calories of Hostess cupcakes (which I used to have almost every evening) and I was just appalled at the amount of carbs and calories I was having in a snack!! (Told my husband--I could have 1/2 for Breakfast, 1/2 for lunch, 1/2 for dinner, and 1/2 for a snack :) )

800 calories can 'buy' us a lot of good food--but it sure as heck can't buy us much of the sugar-rich fatty foods we've had before.

But life is going to be so much better for us, shelli--so it's a trade off we've made and it's a better one. I suggest you do what I've done--I've sent my Christmas cards, decorated inside and out, and I've wrapped all the gifts I've bought. Or go to the gym and work off your sadness, girlfriend--it's great for you!:)

With experimentation, research and dedication, "diet" food can be yummy too!! I'm only banded two weeks, but I'm already trying to figure out how to modify my favorite recipes to work for me. It's like a game or challenge. I love to cook, so I'm just adding to the challenge of making it healthy and taste good at the same time. Even looking for new recipes can be fun.

I have the blues too. I think I have been experiencing some hormonal fluctuations since the band. I am able to reflect on the good changes that have occurred in my life since getting my band and I am grateful for it and the future but just seems like something is missing. Feels like my life is a merry-go-round of calories, carbs, Protein, Fluid, exercise and sprinkle that in with work & "significant other" stress...need i say more.

I've had the odd day when I've felt like that. Usually I turn to food when I am upset or stressed but haven't since the band so can't suppress those emotions in that way any more. So needless to say, they come to the forefront and I have to stop and look at what's going on... very hard for an emotional eater.

Yes, there are lot of old issues surfacing now that I can't deaden them with food. My doctor said that for every pound of fat you lose you lose a unit of estrogen so he said as long as I am losing I will be in the "fat losing menopause." I know all the reasons for the blues but ------------well somedays-------------------------

Thank you for your support and your kind words OH juli.

Take care,

shelli:)

Your enthusiam and energy has cheered me. I like what you said about it being a trade off. Everytime I put on that sweater or pair of slacks and they are too big or fit better I think it is amazing what is taking place in my life right now. Thank you for your support and for being there.:)

I have only been banded for 2 weeks and boy have I been emotional. I had no idea how much I was hiding behind food. I've cried more in the last 2 weeks than I've cried in a long time. I knew that I used food to comfort me but didn't realize how much I did it.

I believe that these feelings will come and go forever as it is part of life. The difference is that we can't cover it up with food anymore. We must learn to cope like "normal" people.

Sorry it's going so sucky for you. But it seems like you have the right perspective.

Glad to be able to help.

Slim people have other outlets for their emotions, some smoke, some shop, some have intense careers and the list goes on. Ours is just a little more obvious to people. Good luck with working it out.

I have been a little sad too. I think it is saying goodbye to all my comfort foods.I really miss some of them. I bought a donut today. The first one since my surgery. I could not finish it and i do not really feel too bad about getting it. Sometimes you just need a bite of something sweet. Before i would have had four or five donuts. Progress, not perfection. I went to the gym later and worked it off. Donna

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
