Barely a week post op and already stopped losing weight.

Recommended Posts

I had my sleeve done on Sept 14, lost 15 pounds, I am barely drinking fluids and suddenly stopped losing weight. 3 days and no changes in the scale with the exception that today I gained one pound. I have my 1st post op appt tomorrow and am curious to know what my surgeon will say. I would like to know what you all think.

Stalls are a normal part of weight loss that just about everyone experiences (search this site for “three week stall” and you’ll see thousands of results). This won’t be the last time you stop seeing your scale move for a little while before starting up again.

in your case, though, I’m not sure I’d even call it a stall. This soon after WLS, you shouldn’t even be looking at the scale. Your body went through a lot during surgery and it has to adjust to the changes. While you were in the hospital, I’m sure they pumped you full of IV fluids, and that alone can cause weight gain. I actually weighed more at my one-week follow-up than I did right before surgery (my surgeon didn’t care — at that point, he was more interested in how I was healing from the surgery).

You should also be aware that since you’re starting at a relatively low BMI, your weight loss is likely to be slower than someone starting out 100 pounds higher than you, so don’t get discouraged by comparing your weight loss with anyone else’s. A lot of people only weigh themselves once a week so they don’t get freaked out by normal fluctuations or stalls, and you might want to consider that.

Consider putting the scale away for a month or so. Your body is recovering from major surgery. If you focus on staying hydrated, sticking to the plan your doctor gave you and resting you will be absolutely fine. I should also say that I had a relatively low BMI when I had my surgery, but I lost weight quickly. Patience and persistence are your friends.

Patience, it will come off. Trust the process.

I did the same thing but at about a month and a half to 2 months out I really started losing. It will happen! Just be patient.

if you are barely drinking Water than you can easily slide into dehydration. Your body is holding on to the small amount of water that you have in your body and sounds like your metabolism has temp slowed down. Drink more water to speed your metabolism up.

Thanks for this post. I am almost 3 weeks out and I haven't lost either. Saw my surgeon yesterday and he assured me that this happens a lot. But I did lose 47 pounds before the surgery so I was really confused. Anyway, he said that I have already physically changed and I have. It's weird. Anyway. I guess we just need to hang in there ;)

I saw my doctor yesterday and he said that is normal some people just stop losing weight at different stages, some sooner than others, but it kicks right back up.
I would follow all your advises as well as just concentrate on healing first. I’m gonna stay away from the scale for a few weeks.

I totally love the support I receive on the site thank you guys.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
