Recommended Posts

Hello i haven't had surgery yet but I'm scheduled for Nov 16th and my program has told me that when you have labs at your pre op appointment they check for nicotine. that may be to scare you into not smoking or may be facts. They say stop 30 days before and it wont show. Hope it goes well for you and i know its hard to stop but don't go back i stopped cold turkey when i knew i was getting WLS. Nicotine make recovery harder and slower. BEST of luck.

From: https://www.webmd.com/smoking-cessation/taking-nicotine-test

Generally, nicotine will leaves your blood within 1 to 3 days after you stop using tobacco, and cotinine will be gone after 1 to 10 days. Neither nicotine nor cotinine will be detectable in your urine after 3 to 4 days of stopping tobacco products.

If you smoke menthol cigarettes or breathe in secondhand menthol smoke, cotinine may stay in your urine longer.

Even if you tell her you don't smoke, my surgeon does a lab to check if you've been smoking just before surgery, and will not operate if it's detected. Every surgeon is different though. It's worth asking the question and getting a straight answer, including how long it would take to get out of your system, and if they would let you be on a patch and weaning down.

I was suppose to stop smoking weeks ago but didnt and need to know if my doctor will know it's only been two weeks and cancel surgery...scared...will it still be in my system

I was told I had to stop at least 6 weeks prior to surgery, and that they would do a nicotine test to ensure I had. My surgeon will not operate if it pops up on the labs.

Surgery today ...yesterday they did my covid-19 and bloodwork...everything came back ok...sleepy

I had the surgery on Wednesday the 14th. I am having a hard time reading my body outside of the pain from gas and incisions. How are you fairing?

Hi: If at all possible don't go back to smoking. It makes you feel like such a failure when you do. It makes surgery recovery a lot harder because your blood vessels constrict due to the nicotine. Hubby and I quit at the same time 35 years ago. I have to laugh. The experts say that you save X dollars a year by not smoking. I'm still waiting for my cheque.
