Calcium Supplements that aren’t gross??

Recommended Posts

Anyone have a recommendation for a decent calcium citrate supplement? The tablets are usually huge and make me really uncomfortable post op. I got some Caltrate fruity chewables, but they’re basically like Tums except they have this insane bitter aftertaste that makes everything I eat or drink afterwards taste gross too. They’ve become one of the worst parts of my day lol.

I use the Bariatric Advantage chewy bites. You can get them from the store on this site. They taste like softer starbursts to me.

I alternate between ReViva liquid calcium citrate and those enormous Calcium citrate pills that I cut in half. The ReViva is fine for a couple of months, then I get sick of the blueberry flavor and the thick consistency and go back to the pills. Then I get tired of the pills and go back to the liquid. It works for me.

I buy the Bariatric Advantage brand for my Calcium. I buy both the chewy ones (I like the strawberry and orange) and the chewable tablet ones (I like the cherry). I like the chewy ones more, but they're also $8 more for the same amount so I end up buying only one bag of those and three of the other ones when I stock up (which I've only had to do twice so far) mostly because I can't make myself spend the extra money to get all chewy ones when I have no issue with the tablet chewables other than they're a little chalky.

Caltrate is Calcium carbonate, and as a gastric bypass patient, you need calcium citrate, so you should get some calcium citrate and stop taking Caltrate ASAP. (FYI, most of the common calcium supplements that you can buy at the drug store are calcium carbonate, so you'll need to check the label when you buy calcium supplements.)

I use BariatricPal French vanilla Caramel soft chews. They are delicious -- they taste like candy. I have an order on the way with the strawberry flavor, and I hope it's just as good. The BariatricPal Store has lots of soft chew calcium citrate supplements in a variety of flavors. I can't vouch for anything but the French Vanilla, but they all have good reviews, so I bet you can find a flavor you like.

One more for the Bariatric Advantage chewy bites. I like the strawberry ones and the pineapple-mango ones.

Another option is chewable berry-flavored BariMelts. They're designed for bariatric patients and taste great.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
