ajb1029 33 Posted September 10, 2020 Hi everyone! So I am hoping to maybe get some recommendations from this lovely community. I need good walking shoes, I am supposed to be at 60 minutes of exercise a day, 6 days a week by the time I have surgery(I have about a month and a half left of supervised diet, 2 visits left!) The issue is I have been putting off new shoes for months but had my wake up call when I took my dog for a brisk 15 minute walk last night and today my feet and leg muscles hurt so much(I even tried my work slip on Crocs thinking I had issues from my sneakers due to support and it made zero difference last night). I can get the exercise in (I love hiking and walking my dog now that I no longer live on the surface of the sun) but shoes have to be addressed. From what the internet tells me, I have supination-I tend to walk on the outside of my feet(evident in the countless pairs of shoes ruined when I wore through the material on the sides). If anyone can throw me recommendations based on what worked for you personally I would be eternally grateful! I can only read so many "lists of best walking shoes for overweight women with supination" since they are all over the place...I plan to check out the Asics outlet store by my work and maybe Academy for New Balance(did I mention I'm on a super tight budget?[emoji51][emoji2360]budget for shoes is around 50-100)Thanks so much, y'all are the best!Sent from my SM-N986U using BariatricPal mobile app 1 GreenTealael reacted to this
catwoman7 11,220 Posted September 10, 2020 (edited) I think a lot of this is just personal preference and you have to try them on and walk around in them to see what feels "right" for you, but I personally like Saucony. In fact, I liked my first pair so much I went back about a month later to get another pair in a different color! P.S. I tried on a pair of Brooks the day I got my first pair of Saucony. I really liked the Brooks shoe, too - in fact, I went back and forth. But then I finally decided on the Saucony. billho 248 Posted September 11, 2020 (edited) I have also been trying to walk more and have struggled with foot and knee pain when I push too hard. I started with Saucony stability shoes, but they weren't all stable and didn't last long, as I too wear the outsides of my shoes. Then I moved to Brooks Ravenna and Adrenaline GTS shoes and they seemed to work fine for a while, but the wore out to fast and have been causing a lot of pain lately. So I broke down and went to "Fleet Feet", which is a fancy runner's chain store and they measured my feet. Turns out, I've been wearing normal D width shoes and I needed EE Wide shoes. I bought a pair of Hoka One One Arahi and I really like them. For the first time in a long while, I can walk for an hour without pain. I'm hoping as the weight comes off, I'll be able to transition to jogging eventually. They were a little more expensive than I wanted, but I think it was worth it. Maybe I can find a deal online when I need to replace them in 6 months. This is what I got: https://www.hokaoneone.com/mens-road/arahi-4/1106473.html?dwvar_1106473_width=reg&dwvar_1106473_color=LLRC Edited September 11, 2020 by billho 1 GreenTealael reacted to this

Thank you for the recommendation[emoji4] I was also thinking about trying New Balance or Asics.Sent from my SM-N986U using BariatricPal mobile app 1 GreenTealael reacted to this
TheRealMeIsHere! 863 Posted September 11, 2020 I also have foot/ankle/knee pain. My ankles pronate. It ended up being something easily addressed by custom made orthotics along with good shoes. An orthopedist can evaluate and make any needed recommendations. I'd start there as you don't want to cause any damage to the internal structures in your feet. 1 GreenTealael reacted to this
Mr Alley Gator 263 Posted September 11, 2020 AJD you are a big guy like i was and i found that the crossfit shoes worked the best. They are made to support you Ankles. I also used a pair of High back baskeball shoes and they worked great - My key was to mix up the shoe types every day and it worked Now my lazy ass just walks around in Crocks and no problems. As you get to your goal the legs and feed will be much better, Trust me on this - Good luck 1 ajb1029 reacted to this
mcfluffington 179 Posted September 11, 2020 I swear by New Balance with added support of a special insert. You can get both at a New Balance store. 2 ajb1029 and Princesa78 reacted to this

When my wife and I started walking we did New Balance and were quite content. I forget if we were pointed at a particular model or what but 17 years later it doesn't matter. She still insists on NB. After I decided I was going to continue running I switched to Nike Free. They are much lighter but less support. I've never worn anything else since. When I was doing 90 mile weeks then marathons, I went through a pair every 6 weeks. They are like being barefoot. Tek 1 ajb1029 reacted to this
ajb1029 33 Posted September 19, 2020 Thank you everyone for all the suggestions! Because of my budget I actually ended up with Ryka Ultimate Running shoe, it is incredibly comfortable and the brand comes in wide! While the amount of cushioning is probably gonna wear it relatively quickly, I plan to buy the same brand walking shoe(Academy did not have those in wide but their website does). The difference was almost immediate, I could barely walk into and out of Academy but I switched shoes to go to Sam's and I could already tell a difference in pain levels. A couple of days of wearing them and there is no pain! Sent from my SM-N986U using BariatricPal mobile app 1 STLoser reacted to this

STLoser 1,099 Posted September 25, 2020 I came here to recommend Ryka, but I see that's what you got. I LOVE Ryka. I have the Skywalk walking shoes.I basically have duck feet. The front of my foot is wide and my heels are narrow, and tennis shoes always slide off my heel. Rykas fit me perfectly and never slip off my heel and they are SO comfortable. I have other Ryka shoes besides the Skywalks and love them all! Sent from my Nokia 7.2 using BariatricPal mobile app 1 ajb1029 reacted to this
waterwoman 180 Posted September 25, 2020 My daughter told me to go to R E I and buy whatever they told me. So glad I followed her advice. They were careful to hear my concerns and question me about my feet and expected activity. If you have a store nearby it might be worthwhile getting their recommendation. 1 ajb1029 reacted to this
