17 days post-op and I'm gaining weight. :-(

Recommended Posts

I had VSG on 8/19. Everything had been going well until I started my latest "phase" of food intake. As of Thursday, I'm in the "soft" phase and can eat ground/shredded meat and other things. Friday night, I had about 2 tablespoons - if that - of very moist shredded chicken and about 1 tablespoon of refried Beans - I felt comfortably full. Since I had leftovers, I had about the same amount for lunch yesterday (in addition to a few teaspoons of cottage cheese for dinner, a Protein Shake, and lots of Water throughout the day). When I weighed myself Wednesday (as required prior to my first post-op dr. visit that afternoon) I was 211. Last night, I literally felt heavier, so I weighed myself this morning - I'm at 213.5. My food & water intake have been below what they should be as I seem to get a stomachache every time I eat/drink (the doctor is aware) so I don't get it. Any idea why this is happening? I'm going to the bathroom (ie, not constipated) and eating/drinking less than I should be. To be clear, I am NOT weighing myself daily, however this 2.5# gain in 3 days is disheartening. 😞

I get it but first I must ask, are you moving the scale every time you’re going to weigh yourself? Every time you move the scale it has to re calibrates. So it’s possible your not getting a correct reading. Try to set up in one spot, so you don’t have to move it. I hope that that is the issue. But don’t be discouraged eventually you should reach your goal weight! Good luck!

Thanks for the tip. The scale is in the same spot in my bedroom - never moves - and it's brand new. 😞

My guess would be Water retention and post surgical weirdness. My suggestion is to focus more on drinking water and weigh yourself less often.

Thanks, everyone! Oddly, I got onto the scale a few hours later and it read 209.5 - which is more like where I should be. I'm guessing it has to be the scale, but the stupid thing is brand new! I bought it when I started this journey, so I'm not sure what happened.

I plateaud for a week and then gained two pounds and it was very discouraging but my doc said stalls and gains will happen and i have to not freak out. if i know im doing what im supposed to do the sleeve will kick back in and the weight will begin to move downwards again. She was right. I lost the two pounds last week and hopefully have broken that stall/regain for a bit. Just wait it out, stay positive and keep following doc orders;)

Are you weighing yourself after you use the bathroom but before you eat and drink anything? To get the best read on your weight loss/gain - weigh yourself in the same "condition" every day. IE, in the morning before you eat or drink anything... after you've used the bathroom... and as close to nude as possible.

My weight fluctuates during the day with the intake of food and massive amounts of water.. that can add 1-2 lbs onto my weight during the day.. and clothing adds weight as well.

Make sure to weigh under the same "variables" each time.

Good luck!

I weigh myself in the am. I have lost a total of 10 lbs (this includes the 2 week liquid diet) and I’m two weeks post-surgery. I’m very discouraged, but hoping things will pick up. I know some people are slow losers and I’m trying to be patient. I had one day that I had a 3 lb gain and was really upset. It will work out!

Hang in there! It does get better! The morning I checked in for surgery, I was 223.2. When I left the next day I was about 9# heavier due to the air & fluids they pump you full of. Within a week, I lost that weight, and now I'm down an additional 15# on top of the 10# from surgery. I had surgery on 8/19, so I'm 3 weeks out. This past weekend I was stuck at 209.5 for about 4-5 days, but I think it was due to a whey Protein allergy. I'm also having a minor complication, so I'm having a UGI x-ray tomorrow morning to see if I have a blockage or something else. As long as you're feeling ok, follow the instructions and things will get back on track! 🙂

Hang in there & try to get your Water & Protein in. I also noticed if I had anything that had too much sodium I retained fluids & the scale didn't like that. I also freaked out & actually tested my scales by weighing a small 2 lb weight to make sure my scales were accurate, they were. Mother Nature wasn't nice to me, but afterwards the excess water weight dropped back off. I still take a stool softener as prescribed, just to help things out. Hope that wasn't tmi but those last couple of things did affect my numbers on the scales. I just went through a plateau & was grateful for all of the advice I read on this forum.

Good luck & remember we are all here for one another!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
