Eating Earlier than scheduled

Recommended Posts

I was allowed very milky, well cooked oatmeal in my purée stage (day 15) but I had to wait until soft foods (day 28) for scrambled eggs & mashed up boiled egg. Your tummy will tell you pretty quickly what it can’t tolerate. Did you get a list of foods to eat at each stage?

It isn't clear what stage you are at - do you mean the consistency of oatmeal so perhaps at the pureed food stage? How long to go the next stage? If its a little while perhaps speak to your surgeon or dietician about advancing early.

Some people do have difficulty when they first try eggs after surgery, from memory I was one of them. First time and second time I did soft scrambled eggs I had a bit of pain and a lot of pressure in the stomach. I didn't try them again for another week or so, they went down better that time.

Not sure of stage I'm just going by the day. My next stage is day 21 with cottage cheese, sting cheese and Poached eggs. I'm ready to eat but also scared of what my tummy gonna do.[emoji17]

I actually progressed more slowly than what my program said because I don't want to eat anything that will make me sick. I was allowed to start "soft foods" in week 3 (which included eggs, canned chicken and tuna, soft cooked veggies, etc.), but I mainly stuck with pureed foods. I started eating shredded canned chicken in week 5. I'm 7 weeks out now and I still haven't tried eggs because I've seen a lot of people say they don't tolerate eggs. My program says I can eat "regular" textures now, including raw veggies, but I'm still eating mostly pureed or very soft things (like refried Beans, cottage cheese, and ricotta bake) because I know they won't give me any trouble. I have had some issues with shredded chicken and ground turkey (in very small pieces and swimming in sauce) and butternut squash noodles getting "stuck" and feeling like they might come back up, so I'm reluctant to try anything denser or firmer than that.

no - I followed my clinic's guidelines because I was afraid of screwing something up.

You are right. I was just having a hungry moment, [emoji2362]I've been following it very strictly. It's a guide for a reason. Just need to take a walk or something.

I had little tastes of different foods. Like when I was on liquids, i had a taste of refried beans.. honestly, it kept me going, mentally, with the stages. esp through the liquid stage. those Protein Shakes get tiresome after a month.

Do what feels best for you.. if you're afraid, then don't do it. I ate some Jello before i should have, and it hurt so much.

Regardless of the varying post op guidelines, I'd be wary of advancing through them early without the okay of your surgeon. You trusted them to do the surgery, trust them with their or their preferred dietician's post op guidelines.

There will be time enough to tweak somewhere down the track when the stomach has healed properly.

I’m going to try to use this opportunity to NOT return to eating chicken and beef. Only fish will be allowed in my new diet lifestyle. I start stage 4 tomorrow where flaky fish is allowed.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
