Little Weight Loss on Pre-OP & None Post-Surgery

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone!

I had the sleeve done last Thursday, 8/27/20. Prior to the surgery, I was on the two-week liquid diet, with the exception being that I could eat 3 egg whites per day. I barely lost any weight on the pre-OP diet despite essentially not eating anything for two weeks; I lost maybe 5 lbs total. My surgeon told me that I did a great job on the liquid diet as my liver was very shrunken for my surgery.

Since surgery, I have lost one pound, so I’ve lost 7 lbs total since starting the liquid diet. I know it hasn’t been long, but I am concerned at this slow weight loss. Should I be concerned, or will things fall into place? It just seems odd not to lose weight when not eating for weeks, and on here many people lost 15-20 lbs on the liquid diet alone.

For context, I weighed 255 when I started the liquid diet diet, 251 at the time of surgery, and 248 now.

I tend to worry, so I am probably just looking for some reassurance that this is normal and doesn’t mean that I won’t ultimately lose weight. I was a huge gym rat pre-COVID, so when I can start working out again I will be in the gym constantly.

Thanks in advance 😃

So my doctor said with all the fluids that they put in our body that we absorb eith 80 or 90% and it takes some time for us to lose that Water weight. I actually went home weighing more than when I went in. I was at 256 at time of surgery came home at 258. It just takes some time, don't get discouraged. I had mine three weeks ago and am down to 243, it will happen. Good luck and keep up the good work.

it's the IV fluids. Some people gain up to 10 lbs from them. It takes them a few days to work their way out of your system - and then you should be on your way!

Your surgery was less than a week ago. It is far too early to start worrying about the scale. Your body has experienced some pretty extreme trauma + IV fluids as mentioned. I'd suggest you put a way the scale for a few weeks. When you do weigh yourself, try to keep some perspective, it was WLS, not magic. :)

Definitely sounds like IV fluids. I went in for a VSG to RNY revision (hernia and GERD) on 8/11 and weighed 212. I spent 4 days in the hospital on IV fluids. I had my first post op on 8/19 and weighed 215.

Just stick with it and trust the process. You will lose weight.

Thanks everyone! I have anxiety, so I often worry about things that I don’t really need to worry about. I really appreciate the comments and support. ❤️

Definitely IV fluids & swelling. I gained 10 lbs when I weighed myself after I got out of the hospital. Took a few days before it came off. Don't worry - it'll disappear before you know it.

You're likely holding onto Fluid weight from while in the hospital. I gained weight while there and took a bit for it to work its way out. Focus on fluid & Protein and the weight will come off. Trust the process!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
