Almost 3wks post-op and still in pain

Recommended Posts

I had a VSG to RNY on 8/11. I was in a ton of pain in the hospital for most of the visit. When I left I was prescribed pain medication and ended up taking the whole thing over the course of the last couple weeks which is something I’ve never done before.

Ive resorted to taking Tylenol several times a day along with icyhot on areas that feel like pulled muscles. I’m even using a heating pad most of the day as well. I’ve even resorted to using one of those motorized carts when doing the shopping because if I don’t, I can’t stand for long periods of time.

I can also tell if I go long times between eating. I accidentally skipped Breakfast the other day because I wasn’t hungry and my shoulder and stomach were in so much pain. I’m also in pain around 20 minutes after I get done eating right where my stomach would be.

Im starting to feel like I’m old and frail instead of in my mid 30’s! Is this pretty much par for the course or do I need to call my doctor? My next appointment isn’t until Thursday.

pain with these surgeries is pretty much all across the board, so yes, having it is normal (and so is not having it). Sorry you were one of the unlucky ones!!

Pain may be normal, but PLEASE call your surgeon and let him know what is going on. Good luck!!

I was in pain the first 4 weeks, by 6 weeks I was pain free and at 3 month I feel pretty normal.

As far as pain 20 min after eating it could be too much food maybe ? Hang in there it gets better

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
