people react to stress differently - some eat more, some less. I tend to NOT eat when I'm stressed - but I do want to eat when I'm bored, so...

Same.

Stress-eater, no.

Boredom-eater, definitely.

Whatever the issue the surgery is meant to help you get over your issues and work out your unhealthy habits and relationships to food.. if you continue to fall back into bad habits every time life gets a little hard you're going to struggle...

i'd say this pandemic is more than a "little hard". The social isolation, people losing friends and family members, people afraid of getting the virus themselves, business owners having to close their businesses, people getting laid off from jobs, etc. This is kind of a major thing we have going on here. Lots of people are very stressed. Understandably.

I gained about 10lbs around March and April. The surgeon's office told me I was approved and I went into an Oh **** mode, killing myself to lose those extra 10lbs before my surgery date. I am a stress eater and this pandemic did not help. I also work remote with 3 boys screaming, playing and fighting in the back ground. My eating increased, my drinking increased. I had thoughts of what if this pandemic turns into the "The Purge". My kids have chronic asthma, and I also thought, "do I have enough meds to make it through if the pharmacy shuts down?" I had to turn the news off, stay off social media. My anxiety was through the roof. And I never had issues with anxiety. Some nights I might have gotten two hours of sleep because I was concerned with the "what if's?". Meal prepping and working out was not on my mind when everyday seems like a chapter of Revelation.

I have maintained my weight and it is work. I have to be very conscience of what I’m eating or I’ll gain. I track everything.

I’m bored out of my skull half the time, my husband is working from home and youngest kid (21 yr old) are here 24/7. I love them dearly but I want them to leave (safely) like they used to! I won’t touch a gym with a 6 foot pole, mask or glove so I just keep busy and go on walks or bike rides.

We have a lot more food stocked up than normal, we eat 90% of our meals here and it gets boring, repetitive and tough. I need new recipes!

This is HARD mentally and physically, I understand 100% why someone would gain. I feel fortunate that this happened 16 months or so post surgery. I feel like I had time to develop good habits and coping skills (aka painting everything). I think everyone is doing their best in a really crummy situation.

At the beginning of the Pandemic I had a regularly scheduled appointment with my PCP done via conference call. She asked me at that time if I was stressed and I said I was fine. Since the appointment I have had issues with sleep and admittedly done more wine drinking than normal. Both stress related.

I’ve kept my weight down but I am pretty sure that I would have reached my stretch goal by now had I not overindulged in drinking.

I’ve reeled the drinking in... Just for reference I hadn’t drank since prior to pre op diet. My surgeon really stressed the dangers of transfer addiction in bariatric patients. I’ve never been an alcoholic but I did drink socially before then.

Covid19 has made people experience an awful lot and made people do things they might not normally do. I believe the repercussions of the pandemic will be felt for years after the virus is defeated.

Are is it to just nod and agree?

No, which is exactly why I commented

What does the fact that i'm a two-time WLS patient have to do with my question

As I wrote in my first post, most WLS patients have a long history of being asked questions similar to the ones in your original post. "Why don't you just eat better? Why don't you just exercise more?" I would think as a two time WLS patient you would know that those comments are condescending and offensive.

Weight gain and reasons are a legitimate question

They are. But you didn't pose this as a legitimate question. You posted it in the Rants and Raves section and you said "Trust that i know i will get flack for this...."

I am left to draw one of two conclusions:

You are completely unaware of the thousands of articles that have been written about pandemic related lifestyle changes and its effects. You are also oblivious to the common sense impact of gyms/parks/trails closures, poverty's effect on one's diet, mental health consequences of social isolation etc..

The option I find easier to believe is this was not a sincere question. Instead it's an opportunity for you to congratulate yourself for having more fortitude than all these weak willed people who when faced with a life altering pandemic and economic shut down and didn't plant a garden, meal plan or pick up milk jugs filled with sand.

Trust in the fact that i don't have to congratulate myself on anything.... and yes i know about the articles on Covid... AS MY HUSBAND HAD IT!!!

You are welcome to draw any conclusion you want... that's what his website is for. I'm allowed to have my questions just like you are allowed to have yours.

Seems like you like attacking people that don't agree with the way you do... cool. But so am I.... This is why when i disagree with you are anyone... i agree to disagree.....

The Emotional First + Aid Kit (A practical guide to life after Bariatric surgery), second edition, by Cynthia L. Alexander, PsyD is a handy little reference I've enjoyed. A sense of humor doesn't hurt either. Even the mainstream are struggling with food given these precarious times. A good time to give grace to ourselves - And, to bestow before others. ;]

I must also be one of a kind who didn't use the "pandemic" as a reason to slack off. I adapted and changed and still kept my weight off....

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
