Has anyone been on Wellbutrin prior to surgery? If so, what did your surgeon have you do after surgery to get your meds? My doctor has switched my Wellbutrin XL with a 2 doses of a 75mg pill. Problem is, when I crush the pills & no matter how I take them I gag & feel like I want to throw up! Then when it goes down I begin to feel nauseous. This makes it sooo hard to make sure I’m getting my meds & I can feel it affecting me. My surgeons office says I have to crush it, but like I said it’s like I can’t stomach it.

I was put on wellbutrin prior to surgery, and let me say it was a GOD SEND. That's why I clicked on this forum. However, that's not what this is about lol.

BUT, with my smaller tablet pills, I cut them into 6 or 8 pieces, so it would be like swallowing tiny pills with my Water, rather than eating them. I'm sure this is frowned upon, and not great, but it was the only way I could get my blood pressure medicine in.

I have not been able to "eat" any of my medicines, and (I sound like a child here oops) I refuse to take liquid medicine so sitting through the pain was my only option.

we were allowed to swallow any pills that were smaller than a pencil eraser. So maybe cut them, like the above poster suggested?

I am on Bupropion , but unfortunately my mail order subscription didn't arrive before my surgery(maybe covid19 delay or just lost in mail). I've went without a few days before surgery & now it's 6 days after surgery. I plan to call my prescribing dr asap tomorrow & ask what she wants me to do & if my dose will need lowered & how to take since vsg.

By the way olivian19xx I am from Southern Indiana, not far from O'boro. Almost went with Dr Ravi Alapati, but instead used my VA care. Heard good results from Dr Alapati's surgeries.

Thanks for the responses everyone! I’ll definitely be trying to cut them in like fours. The pill isn’t big at all!

Bupropion has a half-life of up to 30 hours.. with that in mind you can probably go a day or two without a full dose until you are able to get them down again. I was able to do full pills 3 days post op... I couldn't do crushed pills at anytime, tasted bloody horrible. As noted above, should be fine with cutting them up into smaller pieces first.

I was allowed to swallow pills while in the hospital the day after surgery. It was especially important for the Wellbutrin because anytime I stopped taking it abruptly it gave me heart palpitations and sent me into hypertensive crisis. Maybe try cutting it in half. If you can take it that way you won’t have to cut it again since it’s so small.

Although I will say I wasn’t allowed/able to swallow huge pills like my Multivitamin or Calcium until the week after surgery.

Holy hell I swear it’s the worst tasting **** ever! I put it in yogurt and almost threw up ugh. Thanks though, I’ll definitely cut it!

My antibiotic pills they gave me were huge like an inch long purple monsters and they had me taking the first one in the hospital the day after my surgery. I was surprised but it didn’t cause any issues. Also the acid pills and my regular meds. The only requirement was to do one at a time at first. In fact when I got home I tried breaking that huge one in half and it made it much worse, the coating on it helps it slide down and broken in half it felt like it was stuck at the top of my stomach.

I was on Wellbutrin XL prior to surgery and no change after surgery. I was not required to crush any of my pills after surgery. I had VSG. This may be different if Bypass done.

no -- it's a surgeon thing. I never crushed pills, either.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
