I am so scared! Is this normal?

Recommended Posts

I'm scheduled to have a revision from a sleeve to a mini gastric bypass in 5 weeks. I am way more scared than the first surgery. I think in part because I know what to expect post op (I had an awful recovery last time). Has anyone else felt like this before their revision?

I'm only looking into having surgery done for the first time ever. BUT, I can tell you this- I'm sure your feelings are 100% valid, since you didn't have a nice go of it the first round.

For my own educational purposes, what was awful about your las recovery time? If I go ahead with this procedure, it will probably be the sleeve.

Thanks Michelle for your reply! My surgeon nicked my spleen and 12 hours after the initial surgery I was in excruciating pain, I had to go under again to rectify internal bleeding. I also had a C-Diff infection that made me very sick and it took three weeks to recover. I know that it was initially only four of five weeks of pain and suffering but the thought of going through this again is weighing on my mind.

Yes, I after going through that, I would be wicked nervous too! 😳 The key to most things is open communication . Did you talk to your surgeon about your last experience? Or is it the same person? In which case, holy cow- yes, I'd be nervous. Again, you have a valid point and reason to be.

For me, I find that the more I talk, vent, etc, the better I feel. Definitely voice your concerns and fears with your doctor and staff. Nothing wrong with that! It's always that anticipatory anxiety before a big leap into something new. Even the night before a plane ride will make me think of 'all that could go wrong' But then when I am actually on the plane, I'm good as gold.

I hope this makes sense. I bet you will be just fine. ☺️ One bad experience doesn't mean it will be a repeat. 😉

I wish you all the best!

Thanks Michelle for your reassurance and suggestions 🙂 I am going with a different surgeon this time around but I will definitely share my concerns with him 🙂

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
