I lost 130 pounds with Atkins. It's a great plan........the rest of this post may sound silly, so forgive me.

I dropped from 426 to the 290's with Atkins and exercise alone. I know I can drop down to my goal/healthy weight without the band as well. But I stopped the diet and didn't drop or gain a single pound because I wanted the band anyways. There is a part of me that knows I can drop the weight without it, but an even bigger part of me that knows that without some type of restriction, I'd likely gain it all back. I'm definitely getting the band as a method of controlling/maintaining my weight...........but Atkins has proved to be the only way I can lose weight. I got approved for the band and I'm very excited about it. I think the band + Atkins + exercise will be the key for me to completely get the weight off and keep it off.

Since I'm kind of new here, I'll post a picture. The first picture is me at my heaviest (around 420) and the second picture is me now (around 290) I hope to drop about 110 more after the band.

Dorr: I've often thought that they should allow people who have lost weight to get a band so that they don't gain it back. To me, its value is more for the maintenance than the weight loss. I fully intend to lose weight with it and for me, it may be the only method that will work, now that I've screwed up my metabolism. But it's knowing I won't gain it back that means the most to me.

By the way, you look great!

Wow Dorr - I was just thinking the second one was your complete After pic and you looked fabulous! It must be different in person if you want to lose another 100lb but judging from the pic alone, you look perfect already!

The South Beach diet is the best way to work your band. If you eat Protein and only good carbs, you'll have the most success with weight loss.

i dont think there really is a "best" way for everyone. People need to experiment and see what works for them.

I thought the same thing about Dorr, 290lbs in that second pic? WOW! Looks like 180 max. Kudos :)

I just meant that if you eat a lot of carbs, your weight loss will slow down. Most people that post on this board have agreed that when they eat a lot of carbs, they have a harder time losing.

If you can eat a lot of carbs and still lose weight, you are lucky.

I am not talking about fruits and veggies. I am talking about things like mashed potatoes.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
