Remembering foods you can’t eat now

Recommended Posts

Nothing off-limits or poorly tolerated, just quantity. My eyes are occasionally bigger than my stomach but my eyes never OVERRIDE my stomach.

If anything, I found myself cutting out any “light” or “x-free” foods. I used to drink skim milk, and now I drink 2%. Post-surgery I realized that the “diet” versions of foods just didn’t register as “food” somehow; I could be satisfied with a cup of 2% milk but still feel deprived after a pint of skim (theoretically. obviously I cannot drink a pint of milk). The light bulb on all of this went off when I tried Halo Top ice cream, which tastes ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE to me and unsatisfying but I could work on a pint of Cherry Garcia for over two weeks and be fine.

So now when I eat, I have a smallish portion of what I call “normal human food”. I buy the normal caesar salad kit, but throw out half the dressing... That sort of thing.

I don't have any "never again" foods but there are some things that just aren't good to me anymore. I used to love barbecue and now it's "meh". I remember how good it used to taste but it just doesn't now. I love holiday food, so I usually let myself taste everything at Thanksgiving and Christmas. Then it's right back on plan.

For me I don’t do any Pasta or bread. They are heavy and swell up in the stomach. Plus, Those are not worth it to me. I’d rather save those calories and carbs for something else. Honestly I don’t miss them really. Pasta was never a big deal to me but bread was. I loved bread. I’m use to not eating it.

I still would like to eat pizza with real cheese on top. Or real cheese in general. Oh, well... Maybe the non-dairy substitutes will get better during the next years. The cream cheese spreads are not the worst and I luckily found a recipes to make my own "parmesan" to sprinkle over Pasta or rice dishes.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
