Please post GS weight loss for first 3,6 12 months?

Recommended Posts

I would love to here some results of what kind of results you guys and girls had from your surgery date to end of 30 days,3 months, 6 months, a year and so on. Have you been able to keep it off. I like to have a cocktail or two but know that will need to change. I am a 62 year old male, former athlete, I weigh 303 and I am 6 feet and a half inch tall. I probably looked by best at around 210. I have got a larger frame and would be way to thin at 175 I believe. I am told that your body will settle in to a weight that it is comfortable with. I will be having a lap-band removed that I gave up on a long time ago. I know the lap-band works for some folks just not for me. My appointment to discuss with the doctor is July 24th. I am excited that I will not have to be fat forever! Let me hear from you!

it seems like most people have had their lapbands removed - so they've been an issue for a LOT of people, it seems. Most surgeons refuse to place them anymore. VSG has pretty much replaced it.

rate of weight loss depends on so many factors that knowing where other people were at various junctures probably isn't going to be of much help. I was a very slow loser, but I was very committed, and I lost 100% of my excess weight.

factors in your rate of weight loss include gender, age, metabolic rate, how active you are, starting BMI, whether or not you lost a fair amount of weight before surgery - I'm sure I'm leaving some out, but those are all major ones.

P.S. it's very common to gain back 10-20 lbs during year 3 post-op. So besides that bounce back, yes, I've been able to keep my weight off. But it's a struggle every day. There's a significant minority of patients who stop paying attention and gain back a lot weight - and unfortunately, a few gain all of it back. You really have to commit to monitoring yourself for the rest of your life.

At 30 days post surgery I was 9kg down from my surgical weight. At 3 months I was 16kg down. At 6 months I was at my goal of 60kg. At 10 months I’d lost another 9kg and have maintained between 50 & 51kg for the last 3.5months.

That was my journey. Yours will be different because of all the factors @catwoman7 mentioned. Best advice is don’t compare your rate of loss with others. For every fast loser there’s a slow loser. If you’re determined, focussed & willing to make long term changes you will be successful.

I’m very glad I had the sleeve surgery & I hope you will be too. Good luck.

The amount, and speed, of weight loss in the first six months after bariatric surgery is mainly determined by genes, so one person's results are in no way predictive of anyone else's. There are gender-specific differences in weight loss that you'll also likely benefit from.

Genetic expression, however, is dependent upon environment, so we can all help our DNA along after surgery -- and for the rest of our lives -- by following key evidence-based bariatric rules such as no liquids 30 mins before or after meals, staying hydrated, practicing Portion Control, mindful eating, Protein first veggies second, chewing food extremely well before swallowing, not slipping back into old eating behaviours and food habits, reading labels if you eat packaged foodstuffs, getting in at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity aerobic physical activity per week, getting enough sleep, and taking all of the required Vitamin and mineral supplements.

Wishing you well with your surgery!

Yep all comes down to how strict and diligent you are with your diet

Very impressive Dude!! Congratulations. This is very encouraging and yes I realize that you have to be diligent. I currently weigh 20 pound less than you and look forward to getting down to around 190-200 lbs. I have a larger frame and that was my weight when playing sports and in good shape.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
