MGB or RNY? Can't decide

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

So I've decided to have gastric bypass after lap band removal, but now the question is do I get the Mini or the RNY?

I already regret getting the lapband in the first place and feel that I could have saved myself money and another surgery had I just bit the bullet the first time. I don't want o go half way again? Has anyone regretted the MGB and revised to RNY?

Reflux was a major issue with my lapband.

Also, I am presently between 195-200 lbs (lost 60 with lapband and regained 30) what kind on weigh loss would I expect with MGB and RNY?

Any advice, thoughts, would help.

I can’t testify to the results but I personally chose from Band to RNY , I have Esophagitis, GERD and a port leak , I didn’t want to take a baby step and then have to do another revision ( if that was possible ) in the future .

I have been struggling with the same decision and also didn't want to have to go through another surgery. I had a sleeve 7 years ago. I have now chosen to go with the MGB (op in three weeks) as the long term risk factors (in particular - bowl obstruction) is much lower than the RNY. It should also resolve your current reflux. I'm still concerned about bile reflux, but my doctor assures me that it isn't that common after MGB. MGB statistically offers better weight loss and a lower chance of regain.

I think this has to be a personal decision, but I had a sleeve first then was advised to have a revision to MGB. Since I struggle with the worst reflux of my life. Dr's just referred me for a secondary revision to RNY and said that is what I should have done in the first place. After my sleeve, reflux was marginal, but after MGB its intolerable. I've had 5 EGD's and 2 Bravo tests and a countless number of different meds to get to the point they would refer me for the RNY and I've wasted years feeling horrible (mind you some of the problems I've experienced had more to do with the California health care system).

So I know different things work for different people, but that was just my experience.

Thank you to everyone who has responded to my post. I appreciate all of your thoughts and advice.

I have decided to go with the MGB and I am booked for surgery on August 27th. I start my shakes tomorrow. I am so looking forward to this change. I have high hopes and high expectations on myself.

Once again, thank you for your help!

I don't think you'll be disappointed with your decision. I had the revision from the Band to MGB in Dec of last year and couldn't be happier. I had the band for 12 years and never lost any weight. Now, since having the MGB I've lost 83 lbs in 7 months. I always hated how the band felt when I ate, now I just feel full. It's not painful or aggravating like that band was. Good Luck to you!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
