Post OP Losts of Questions

Recommended Posts

When I had my duodenal switch on June 3 I was supposed to be in the hospital overnight and go home the next day. Well around 1am I started having horrible pains in my stomach. They rushed me to MRI and then to emergency surgery and had to have a section of my intestines removed. So I was in the hospital for 3 weeks with no visitors due to the covid19 numbers rising. Well now I am home and got all 50 of my staples out of my stomach. I got cut from my sternum to my belly button and on top of that I had 5 2 inch cuts from the laparoscopic surgery. It was all a me. Now to my paranoid questions. Do you poop alot when you poop? Seems like everytime I poop I go alot! I only take in a Premier Protein at Breakfast, 2 oz of Tomato Soup at lunch, a premier Protein for in between, and a premier protein for supper. All day long I of course I dring Water. I take all my chewable vitamins during the day. Also, my poop is almost a black green, is this normal? Also, since the hospital I have had diarrhea and lastnight all of a sudden my poop was stuck and would not come out. 4 enemas later still nothing I took 4 stool softeners and finally at 5 this morning it relived. Any help would be great! Thanks

Not a "Switcher" but these are pretty common questions so :

+ High frequency bowel movements seem to be common for this surgery

+ High Protein diets tend to produce hardened stools/constipation

+ Higher Water intake/fiber supplements/stool softeners daily helps

+ Embrace/ Silagen /Cicatape/ Metipac/ etc medical silicone tape will help with the scars

+ Notify your team immediately if you experience an sudden rapid or slowing heartbeat that persists, worsening pain in legs or abdomen, trouble breathing, see blood (bright red) in your stool that persists, have a high fever, extremely lethargic, etc.

Happy Healing ❤

I'm so sorry to hear what you've gone through. I'm glad you're home.

As for pooping a lot; sometimes yes, sometimes no. Let me say, I keep the plunger next to the bowl bc too often I fill it up and need to plunge. :) Other times it's less. It's interesting as you're not eating much, yet going a lot. I eat much more than you. I do go about 5x/day but that's how it's been for me since the DS.

Do you take Iron? That can make my poop much darker.

Does your poop ever float?

Have you spoken to your team? Seems as if you might need a dose of Flagyl to straighten things out. I needed it about 6 mos. postop bc I was having dreadful diarrhea. I know a good many DSers who use it at least yearly to keep things flowing well.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
