What habits did you replace eating with?

Recommended Posts

What kind of replacements did you come up with to replace eating out of boredom, stress, emotions, being tired, etc?

Obviously, I won't be able to eat my way thru those emotions, so I was wondering what others came up with.

I thought that in the evenings, a hard time for me, I could catch up on a ton of reading. I love to read. During the day at work, I can start back working out during lunch at the company sponsered gym, instead of going to the food court and eating lunch at my desk.

But I'm looking for other ideas for when things are really bad.

Thanks

I guess the habit I replaced with eating is shopping.....I try and bargain shop - I've bought a lot of nice smaller clothes on Ebay.

I also purchased several subscriptions to some fitness magazine, I currently have Fitness, Oxygen and womens health. When I want to turn to food, I try and grab one of these magazines and flip thru them. When I see the toned physics, it motivates me to "stay away" from the oreos. lol.

The shopping is hurting my pocket book, lol. But I love it. I love the fact I can buy a pair of 10's or 11 Jr. jeans and they fit!

okay so this will sound odd, but I am trying out crochet. I asked one of the ladies at work to teach me how to do it. Sounds odd for a guy to do it, but it keeps both hands busy while you are watching tv. That means I can't put something in my mouth if both hands are busy.

Not so odd - I started knitting again. Also, exercise.

It is not odd for a man to crochet. It is super calming too. I worked with a guy who crocheted. He was kinda a rasta type and made himself hats to keep his super long locks in.

I picked up cross-stitching again although I don't work on it every day. There are always things to get done around the house as well.

I'd have to agree with Jachut--I'm finding that I'm not hungry, so eating due to boredom is less and less of an issue for me!

There are several things I have read in the news about after having surgery many people replace eating with someone like too much shopping, drinking, smoking, etc. I don't find a desire to drink anymore since surgery but shopping is very enjoyable for me right now. It's not such a good thing though as I'm on a very tight budget. Hopefully I can keep it under control and keep my web surfing and computer game playing hobbies at a maximum as those are free!

If I find an urge to shop I go to goodwill or thrift stores. That saves me money and you can find some really amazing stuff if you dig deep enough!!

I love wine and enjoy going out for drinks, but I'm scared to even consider drinking after getting banded for fear of not losing weight. How are folks turning to drinking and still managing to lose or keep from gaining?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
