Started soft foods today

Recommended Posts

I'm 15 days post-op - and started soft foods today. It's been a challenge! I literally had 1/3 of a scrambled egg for Breakfast, 1/3 for lunch, and 1/3 for dinner. And 1 tablespoon of grits with 1 teaspoon of light cream cheese. I did the whole mash into tiny bites, and I took breaks between each tiny bite, and chewed well - which was really weird trying to chew a bite the size of a pencil eraser 15 times. I'm going to have to have a Protein Shake at some point tonight to try and boost my Protein. And my stomach is *really* grumbling tonight. I really haven't had a hard time with full liquids - after the first few days. I'm hoping soft foods will kinda be like liquids were at first - and I'll be able to eat more in a few days? And I haven't gotten in my 64 ozs of Water today either - with the whole stop 30 mins before and 30 mins after - and also, if I feel pressure in my chest, my surgeon wants me to wait 2 hours before eating or drinking - which I did that after breakfast. Oh well - I know it's just a goal, and it should get better in a few days - and those few bites of egg did really taste good! Not sure if anyone else experienced the same thing?

The Protein Drinks go towards your total daily Fluid intake. They are 11oz each so if you have two per day, that's 22oz right there.

sounds like everything's progressing as it should. And yes - you'll be able to eat more once your stomach heals.

This is so refreshing to hear. I just advanced to purée foods today. Surgery was 2 weeks ago. I puréed baked chicken and added mashed potatoes. I ate 2 tablespoons of the chicken and 4 small bites (1tsp) of the potatoes. I’m content. I’m handling this better than liquids, thankfully.

I just started week 5. Lost 17 pounds in the first 28 days. I tolerated liquids well so doctor gave OK to start puree on day 10 (instead of day 15) and soft foods a week later (day 17). At first I could only eat a couple of tablespoons of food (the entire day) but now can eat a full egg with some additional egg whites added. The amount you can eat will increase with time and will vary depending on what it is. I can eat about 5 oz of yogurt but only 3 oz of meat. I still drink a Protein Shake almost every day in order to meet my 60 gram daily Protein requirement. I tried eating meat twice in one day to get in protein, boy did I pay a price. I felt miserable the entire evening and into the night. I keep my calorie count between 500-600 per day. Give your body time to adjust. And yes, food does taste good after having had just liquids for a couple of weeks.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
