What's healthy range for Carbs after WLS?

I chose to do my own thing (and told her so): Try to reach 60-70g protein/day, limit NET carbs to under 20g per day, and let the fat intake fall where it may, aiming to stay below 600-700 a day.

I admit, I was/am one of those that choose stay away from carbs. I found that it was the key to rapid weight loss FOR ME. However: The lack of carbs did tend to make me look haggard and sickly near the end of weight loss phase. Once I was done losing weight and re-introduced some carbs (I probably average around 100g a day now), my face filled out and I didn't look so skeletor-ish.

I still don't eat rice, Pasta, bread, white potatoes if I can help it.

All of the above was true for me. I was vigilant about carbs for about the first 7-8 months until I reached goal weight, and I also tried to watch fat as well. (And I had no sugar at all.)

I got to goal weight easily, then kept losing and became rather gaunt. I started adding carbs like bread, rice, etc. and got back "up" to my goal weight--plus about eight pounds. I cut down on the carbs again and went back to goal weight fairly quickly, which is where I've stayed for the the past eight months or so.

I still limit carbs, fat and I consume zero sugar. It's not for everyone, but it works for me.

It's been a year, I talked to the doctor about my progress on May 21. Since I'm 6'0 she recommended I drink a 128 oz and half Water, Protein Shakes to maintain muscle, my calorie intake 1600 and carb intake no more than 20g. I've still been trying to get to 1600 calories. Before I had the talk with the doctor, I was consuming 1200 calories which seems to be easier to maintain 20g carbs with that calorie intake. I was also still losing weight even though I went beyond 20g of carbs. I think I might do my own thing.

I was not given a range of carbs or any calorie guidelines, but my nutritionist did encourage a balanced diet. I am supposed to be eating Protein first, veggies second, and carbs last. so under those guidelines, I figured there probably won't be much room for carbs by the time I can get to them. I am on day 14 and just moved on to softs foods. my diet guidelines included cream of wheat as soon as one week out and oatmeal after two weeks. I have tried both for sake of variation. my stomach seems to be fine with it and I can actually eat a fair amount (1/2-3/4 packet of cream of wheat made with 3/4c skim milk and 1/4 cup rolled oats cooked in 1/2 cup of Premier Protein shake). To be honest, both of these foods make me extremely tired after I consume them. so I am getting to the point where I think a Protein Shake is the best way to start the day. it still takes me a while to finish one, but it doesn't make me want to lay down for hours afterwards. I am trying desperately to fight the fatigue and get back to at least walking around.

not all programs are ultra-low carb. Some are more balanced. My program was a balanced one, too. They never talked about carbs - they just stressed Protein first, then non-starchy vegetables, and then, if I had room (which early on I did NOT), then maybe a small serving of fruit or whole-grain carb. We were told to focus solely on getting our protein and fluids in, and not to worry about calories in the early months. I didn't really start counting calories until I was probably six to eight months out. I wasn't eating enough those first few months to worry about them.

P.S. it's fine to start the day with a Protein Shake. Some people have a hard time stomaching solid food in the morning, so for those folks especially, a protein shake will do the trick!

I am 10 years out. Lost 140 pounds. In last 5 years gained 40back. Life happens. In the last year I have lost 36 of those pounds. How ? Back to basics. Protein - I grill fish or chicken or beef. Portion it up - then I make lots of vegetables - fresh riced cauliflower brocolli carrots and chop in onions or garlic fresh herbs steamed and then a quick sautéed in olive oil - meals for lunch and dinner for a few days. Hot cold - over salad - add stir fry veggies to that .... filling and all healthy. My carbs come from the veggies and fresh fruit. I also will have a daily treat that I don’t count - as anything. One skinny cow ice cream or a piece of chocolate - 2 little dove bites are heaven. And I am in control !!! Intentional eating.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
