Help - Post surgery problems

Recommended Posts

I'm glad to ear they found the answer. Hopefully she will decide to keep her band. I tried many diet/exercise plans over a lot of years and this is the only one i have seen good results with. I had a few complications with my surgery, mostly due to a large amount of scar tissue from previous abdominal surgeries. Mine took just over 4 hrs to complete, but thanks to my surgeon, she was able to complete it. Tell your wife we are all here for when she gets out and home and has questions/concerns...Dave

Thanks for the update - sounds like she's doing better.

I hope she decides to keep the band and its smooth sailing from here on out.

Was she required to see a therapist pre-op? If so (or even if not - I'm sure the hospital has someone on staff) it might be worth while to have her talk to someone before making the choice to remove the band. I'm sure she did a lot of research and had to jump threw a lot of hoops to get to the operating table. I'd hate to see her regret her choice.

She is so lucky to have such a caring husband. I hope she feels better, just let her know to hang in there, she may need to take baby steps toward her recovery/journey to better health. It is her decision to make as to whether she keeps the band or not, but if it was me, I would keep or at least get the larger band and be on my way. I would not have gone thru all of that with nothing to show for it. Keep us posted, and once again Thank You for being such a wonderful husband as to come on this website with the soul purpose of finding help for her, way to go!!!

You said: Yesterday she felt prematurely full after 1 med cup of Protein drink in the hospital

I don't understand the concern. That is NORMAL. You can't drink very much after the surgery because of the swelling. A medium cup of Protein Drink is quite an undertaking. Don't give up now. They are probably keeping her because they want to keep her electrolytes up and easiest wasy is through IV. You don't want to release someone who still feels queasy and have them get dehydrated.

I hope she decides to give it a go. So many folks who are gun-shy of surgery, discomfort, etc. have a knee-jerk reaction when everything doesn't go perfectly. Everyone is different, everyone heals differently. She made the commitment...you guys should cowboy up and see it through and she will be glad she did.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
