Hi everyone my name is Paula and I'm 35 I had gastric bypass on 31 January this year. I am concerned about my Hair loss I had thick long curly hair before surgery and now I am loosing so much of my hair that is more upsetting than loose skin. They become brittle and Matt. I am taking all my Vitamins and I was taking them post op too. I dont know what else I can do to help my hair. Any advice?

not much you can do about surgery-related Hair loss other than keep on top of your Vitamins and Protein so it won't get any worse than it would be otherwise. Other than that, time. It WILL eventually stop - and grow back. My hair loss phase lasted about three months, I think. Luckily, I didn't lose all that much (and most people don't lose enough for it to be noticeable to others - but unfortunately, some do...)

I had surgery mid March and just this week I have noticed more Hair loss. I had been waiting for it! I have shortish curly hair but my hair texture has always been fine. Will be interesting to see how the next few months plays out.

I found this an interesting read even though it isn't specifically about weight loss surgery.

Hey, I want to start by saying I completely understand how you feel. I also have long, 3b and 3c curly hair. It was extremely difficult to watch it fall out in excess. My excess shedding started at 2 months and has returned to normal shedding at 6 months. I did notice it.

I promise you it will stop eventually. I know that in those moments it doesn't seem like it will. I can assure you that it will. The best thing you can do it take your Vitamins. I also recommend doing a deep condition twice a month and a Protein treatment twice a month (depending on your hair's porosity).

The great thing about curly hair is that you can hide it based on what products you put in your hair and how you style it. For example, use products that are lightweight, use less product in your hair, you can use a pick to get more volume, ect.

Let me know if you want more tips :) I love taking care of my curly hair and I have done a lot of research about it.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
