Pregnancy and weight loss/gain

Recommended Posts

I’m a year and a half out from surgery and my doctor and I are very happy with my weight loss. I am also very happily pregnant (in my first trimester) and so far have had great medical care. I spoke with my bariatric nutritionist today and she mentioned that I should absolutely not lose any more weight and should work on eating more, ideally seven eating moments per day, gaining 15-25 lbs over the course of my pregnancy. I’m running 5k 3-4 times per week and have been continually, slowly naturally losing weight. I told her this and she said to just eat more so I would gain more weight.

In hindsight I feel a bit like I wasn’t totally done losing weight. The shift from being focused on weight loss to gaining weight is unexpectedly hard to make, but it course I follow my doctors instructions to a T. Anyone have similar experiences with struggling to gain weight during pregnancy?

Not me personally, but my sister did. She was actually only about 4 months out from surgery when she got pregnant. She just stopped concentrating on gaining or losing & concentrated on trying to eat good things for baby. If you have questions let me know I can ask her! She also looks amazing lol

Pre my weight loss surgery with my second pregnancy I lost weight, simply from being so sick and starting out being overweight. My midwife had no issues with it at all. I just made sure the food I was eating was healthy and that I took all my supplements. You just need to remember that your body will drag what it needs from you to grow a healthy baby, so make sure you are getting enough of what you need! Particularly Calcium and Iron. Congratulations xx

I got pregnant at 11 months post op and lost weight in the first few months due to nausea. I’ll be 26 weeks Friday and I’m just now 3lbs more than what I was when I first got pregnant my dr actually asked if I was eating enough(I assured her I was I eat more than I did before being pregnant which I guess is totally normal since our body can only hold so much at a time then it passes quickly and being pregnant you require more for baby). Once nausea went away I did notice I was hungry more frequently and if I’m being honest I still am 😅 I usually eat or at least have a snack every 2-3 hours.

But baby is healthy and growing. In the beginning he was measuring a week smaller but at our 23 week sono his arms and legs measured at 26weeks so his estimated weight was i think .4oz higher than most 23 week babies which was good considering they worried he would be on the smaller side because of the surgery. I do see a high risk dr along with my obgyn because of the surgery and because I used to have diabetes and high bp. But going to the high risk dr means I get to see him monthly to make sure he’s okay💙

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
