What Percent of Excess Body Weight Loss is Normal on the Pre-Op Diet

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

So I'm starting day 6/14 of the pre-op diet (which I've followed faithfully) and in the past five days I've lost around 11% of my excess body weight (13 pounds). Is this pretty normal? It feels weird but I don't know if I should contact my dietitian because I know some of this is Water weight.

I believe I lost 16 pounds in the two week pre-op diet. I believe I was 337 before starting it and my surgery weight was 321 so... yeah, 16 pounds. Some people lose more, some lose less, but if you're worried then definitely call the dietician for peace of mind at the very least.

Most of us here i have seen loose 10-18 in the two weeks. But be careful that is not going to be that way the whole time but that seems to be the average. I am male and lost 23 in 10 days but most of it was Water and shortly after surgery bounced up a few. Everyone is different so just do the best you can and stick to the plan and Journey

You didn't state your starting weight, but regardless, it's pretty normal. And like the posters said above, its mostly Water weight.

Excited for you for starting this...it really is a game changer.

Good Luck!

Oops, I did forget to give stats! SW 240 pounds CW 227, 5'6" , female, early 20s. :)

Thank you! I'm excited, I've always had difficulty keeping the weight off so I'm really looking forward to this. I was reading studies about the excess body weight reduction pre-surgery and I found one that said surgery complications for patients who lost 10+ percent of their excess body weight before surgery had a slightly higher risk of complications versus patients who lost 6-10 percent of their EBW but I think I'm worrying too much about this, haha

Ya, I think you may be adding unnecessary worry on your plate, lol! (But it get it, change and the unknown can be anxiety-inducing).

Stay the course, keep your eye on the prize and do the honest best you can do...its totally worth it. ❤️

Complications may or not be in your future, but I figure its better to leave the worry on those if they actually happen.

Well I personally started my own pre-op diet like 2 months early and had lost 65lbs before surgery day my surgeon said that's good because it makes surgery safer and recovery easier basically any pounds you can lose on your own definitely helps..

Now I'm below my goal weight and loving Life.

I think it completely depends on the person. I know that every thought I had was about getting as much off as possible prior to surgery. I don't think you need to contact the dietitian unless you were loosing nothing. Your moving in the right direction good luck to you !! Your on an incredible journey but it is all worth it!!

maybe 15 lbs? I was around 330 before I started the two-week diet, and 315 the morning I was rolled into surgery. So about 5% of my weight. But I lost quite a bit of weight prior to that, so I'd probably lost a lot of Water weight even before then.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
