4 weeks post-op and DIZZY!

Recommended Posts

I had my surgery Nov 1st, and for the last week have been having dizziness. It's almost always after I stand up from a seated position, and happens at least 6 times a day. I told my surgeons nurse about it and she said to take in more Protein, and to make sure I get in 64oz of Water. I've done that for the last 2 days, and am still just as dizzy. It's not just a little light-headedness....it's been stop in my tracks and grab the nearest object because I feel like I'm going to fall down kind of thing. :faint:

I am on 2 blood pressure meds, and my BP has been normal every time it has been taken. But I was wondering if it could still be low blood pressure - and it only happens when I stand up? I feel fine otherwise - no more pain, able to eat and drink (just started soft foods today). Anyone else have this happen?

I'm dizzy in the morning. I have to slide along the wall when I first get out of bed. Hummmm... There must be something to this. Then I have the shakes until mid-morning. After that I'm fine for the rest of the day. I wonder what's up with this.

Yep sounds to me as though a trip to your primary care doc is in order.

I would check my BP several times through the day, and especially at the time you are having the dizzy spells. Your BP can fluctuate drastically during the day---it may be as simple as changing to a slow release type of med.

They might also want to check your blood sugar. Since our eating ways have changed so much in such a short period of time, there are some who have issue with their blood sugar going to low.

When my DH had heart surgery, they wanted his BP checked minimally 8 times per day when we come home, and sure enough through it we found him in A-fib!

Check it out, do not ignore it!

It could be your Dr. will find an inner ear infection or something simple to explain it, but better to know!

Good Luck!

Kat

I think its orthostatic hypotension. Means your pressure drops when you stand because more blood runs to your legs. You probably would notice the drop if you took your BP before and after standing. You should see your Dr and get your meds adjusted. Be sure you are getting all your fluids in.

Yes this is orthostatic hypertension, the same thing happened to me on about day 4 after surgery. I was on 3 BP meds and had to drop down to only 1. My BP dropped to 80/55. I was surprised that it would drop that fast after surgery, but I have lost 20lbs. and all of the Water loss can affect your BP. Since going to only 1 pill my BP is now at 120/70 which is just about perfect. It took another 4 days to regulate but now I am doing fine. 3 weeks post-op.

Good luck,

Ari

Hmm... does anyone know much about low blood pressure and the band? If your BP is already low, is it likely to drop further after being banded?

In spite of my weight, my blood pressure is normally quite low and I get that dizziness quite often on standing up. I've always just lived with it, but I'm getting banded in 10 days and if it drops further with losing weight, that sounds like a worry...

Agree about the BP meds. My regular doctor took my BP and it was 125/75 so she wrote me a script for half the dose. She said she didn't want my BP to go down suddenly. She said to give it a week or so and then go on the new ones.

Please see your doctor asap. My cousin had the same problem and her blood sugar was dangerously low. Hope you feel better.

I agree that you should see your doc. I was banded on 11/12; and, at my first checkup with my internist (2 weeks later) my BP meds were cut in half. It's a fabulous side effect of banding, but one you should keep an eye on.

Thank you to everyone who answered!

I will call my PCP tomorrow and leave a message (she will be in the office on Tues). Plus I'm going to have my BP taken several times tomorrow by the nurse at work because I'm sure my Dr will want to know my numbers.

I'll let you know what I find out.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?
