Anyone getting a Medic Alert necklace/bracelet?

Recommended Posts

At our preop class yesterday, they said we should get a Medic Alert necklace or Bracelet . .. anyone else hear that? It should have:

No NSAIDS or Asprin

No NG Tube

Post LabBand Surgery (Gastric Bypass as appropriate)

Hummmm .. . I'll think about it .. .

I built my own . . . got the chain I liked . . . and then the "tab". I put the "No NG Tube" on the top line . . .that was my first concern . . . I never wore jewelry before . . . now I have a reason to wear silver . . . and I'll keep the links we have to remove as I go along :)

The NSAIDS are moltren, ibuprofen, alleve and those types of things. They, and asprin are very hard on the stomach. I'm not sure if lapbanders can eventually take the NSAIDS - but i know bypass people cannot. I had to stop my ibuprofen a couple weeks ago to let my stomach rest for surgery on Monday .. . There are better explinations out there I'm sure, but that's the gist of it I believe.

since I'm going to be wearing it all the time, I got the sterling . . . but didn't spend quite that much. You can also google medical alert bracelets and you can get all sorts of styles and prices.

Yes I did get a Bracelet. I bought mine from Lauren's Hope online and spent about $60 on it but I can't swim with it. (I was told it would last longer if I kept it as dry as possible) The clasps are very hard for me to put on and take off so I sent it back to have a magnetic clasp put on it but because I didn't do that at the time I first placed the order I had to pay an additional $30 for the magnetic clasp, labor and shipping! It has turned out to be pretty costly, but it is very nice to look at and pretty important to have in case of emergency!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
