Too Much Protein/Too Many Calories?

Hi y'all,

I've been stalled in the 270s for a few weeks now and I don't know what to do other than ride it out (which I'm doing, but not well). I'm about 16 months out from surgery and I'm averaging about 800-1000 calories per day and getting in 90-100+grams of Protein in with 3 meals and 3 Snacks. I've upped my Water intake to at least 80 oz/day and I've also started exercising again after an injury and laziness sidelined me for a while. My fat and carbs are usually around 40 g/day but on a higher calorie day, it can get into the 60s for.

Am I getting in too many calories and too much protein for where I'm at? Too many carbs/fat? I think I put myself in maintenance and I still have about 100 lbs left to lose before I hit goal. Any tips?

I'm thinking that at 270 lbs and 5'6", 1000 cals a day would be sufficient to lose weight on. I did a quick calculation with your stats and theoretically, you *should* be losing at anything less than 2400 cals/day...!

Have you been at 1000 cals a day the entire 16 months?

No. For a while I couldn't break 800 calories until about 9-10 months. My injury occurred about 6 months out of surgery, curbing my exercise substantially and then depression hit and I lost myself for a good 3 months towards the end of 2019. I stopped tracking in my app but I would put myself at 1200-1400 calories during that time. Got it together in January when I was about a year out and by then I'd lost 110 lbs.

I find I have to switch things up drastically. I’ll do a super low carb low calorie day (like 700-800 cals), then a higher carb, higher calorie day (like 1200 cals), then back to 900 cals. Doing that almost always keeps me from stalling. I just never let my body get use to the same thing. It’s also what was recommended by my surgeons office/dietician if stalls happen.

Keep saturated fats low as you can and sugar.

Low bad carbs is good too.

Also be careful of sodium in food.

Maybe I misunderstand...how long have you been stalled, and how many calories do you/did you average during the stall?

For my current stall, I've been stalled in the 270s for the last few weeks, almost a month (April/May). During this month, I've been averaging 800-1000 calories.

That makes sense. I'm pretty much eating the same thing every day and don't have much variety in my diet. I'll start switching things up. Thanks!

Ah, ok, I would think that since it's only been a month (I incorrectly thought you have not lost weight for the last SIX MONTHS @800-1000 cals), this is just a normal part of the process this far out from surgery. Weight loss does tend to plateau as you progress. So long as you stay the course (especially at 800-1000 cals), it will eventually pick up again.

        Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

      Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

      Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

        Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
