the BMR is what it (supposedly) takes to run your body even if you lie in bed all day. You have to factor in your activity level to get at the level that it supposedly takes to maintain your current weight. So to lose, you'd have to fewer calories than that second figure (BMR + activity level). But in my case, the BMR level alone is the high end of my maintenance range - so I'd have to eat quite a bit lower than that to lose.

in other words, theoretically I would burn 1717 calories if I just stayed in bed all day. But since I'm pretty active, I can supposedly eat 2500 (slightly more) to maintain my current weight. But I'd gain weight like crazy on that. Even at 1717, I'd just be maintaining my current weight, so I have to go lower. I guess with a more statistically "normal" person at my weight/activity level, they could drop down to their BMR (1717) and lose, but I can't. My actual BMR is evidently lower than what the BMR calculator indicates.

so my BMR with my activity level right now is 1847 so I have to eat less than 1847 a day to lose ? I eat on a regular day 800-1000 calories under 40 carbs 80 Protein and at least 70-80 ozs of Water . so what do you think should I be eating more or no ? SORRY for asking your all these questions and I know people are different but you seem to have a fix on this.... Thanks

theoretically, yes, but it doesn't work that way for everyone. There are obviously other things that factor into this - because I have to eat well below my supposed BMR to lose, let alone my supposed BMR + activity level.

there is a test you can take to get your actual BMR (as opposed to using one of the online calculators). They have you breathe into something. I don't know how accurate those are - but probably moreso than the internet calculators. The easiest way is to just experiment with different calorie levels and see where you maintain and where you start to lose. It took me awhile to figure mine out - it was just trial & error.

I was eating 800-1000 calories from about eight months out to around the year mark. After one year, I was at around 1000-1200 and still (S-L-O-W-L-Y) losing. I've been in maintenance for the last 3.5 years, and I figured out I could maintain it if I stayed within a 1500-1700 range most days. But this might be different for you. The best way to tell is just to experiment with different ranges and see what happens.

are you losing weight at 800-1000 now? Do you want to, or do you want to stop losing and maintain?

P.S. if you start playing around with different calorie ranges, you really have to do it for two or three weeks to get the full effect. It may take that long to see to the effects on the scale. If you want to lose weight but the scale hasn't moved from whatever range you're working with at the time, then you'll need to go a bit lower.

Its very slow as far as the pounds I definitately want to lose much more , If it were not for the sizes ive gone down I would be discouraged at almost 8 months out.

things do slow down at that point. I remember at six months out my loss dropped to 5-8 lbs a month - and at some point dropped even lower than that. After the year mark, it was like two lbs a month. But it kept going until I was around 18 months out

Hello all,

I am 4 years post op and I totally feel your pain. Post sleeve i was 256 lbs. My lowest weight was 146lbs. I am currently 205 lbs. I have made the decision to get back on track with it all. I will start with the basics of Protein Shakes for 3 days, then slowly introduce other allowable foods. I do know that my sleeve is still intact because i cant eat alot at one time, but once that food digests, I am ready for more, but only out of habit, not hunger. For me it is mental because when I am bored I eat. Since having my last child I have began to fall back into old habits, but I know I can make the changes because my sleeve still works and I am ready to do this once again!!

How are you doing on your weight loss? Our stories are similar with having babies after WLS.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
