Surgery was yesterday, need encouragement

Recommended Posts

I am almost 2 weeks out I know it is super hard especially in the beginning to get all the liquid in. The 2 things that have helped me the most are popsicles and crystal light blackberry lemonade. The popsicles count as 6 oz of liquid and I can usually get a whole one down in a half hour where if I were to drink the same amount of liquid it would take much longer. Also start the colace asap. I wish someone had told me that

Mate you've gone to food in the first week that's the number one issue for slow weight loss... Everyone knows the first month's is when you take advantage of the liquid and puree diet to lose the most.. I don't understand people who are in such a rush to easy solid foods..

Not trying to be rude but you've kinda set yourself up for failure eating those kinds of food so early and giving into cravings...

I've been through surgery bypass and come out the other side and below my goal weight and feeling great but I did that by being very strict from day 1 maybe I was lucky I didn't have cravings for months nor did I give into anything for months.. I don't know what else to say mate...

For anyone who may stumble upon my initial thread and be looking for their own encouragement. I had a complete reversal of opinion by day two after surgery. Could easily drink 150-200 ounces a day, eat solid food by day 3 or 4, and have no problem drinking carbonated beverages by before the first week, even with a straw.

Wow, did your doctor give you approval for solid foods 3 -4 days after surgery??? I (and I believe most of us) was instructed to gradually increase intake from liquids to puree foods, to soft, and finally solids 8 weeks after surgery, avoiding specific high carb and high fat/sugar foods. Also, no carbonated beverages (not b/c of the lack of tolerance so much as the detrimental affect of bloating the stomach, and stretching it out). Also, no alcohol for at least a year for me.

Are you following up with your dietician to make sure you are eating foods that will help you lose the weight you want? After all, the surgery is just a tool, but will not work if you go back to old eating habits. My calorie intake is limited to about 800 calories a day, and I am struggling with weight loss even then.

No, they advised against solid food for four weeks, but sometimes I play fast and loose.

I have followed up with dietitian, but I knew as much about diet and nutrition as she does before the surgery. My obesity was simply from alcohol consumption, poor choices, and putting a sedentary career first. I have long since known what had to be done to accomplish weight loss. There was 8 years or so period before I was married where I was akin to an amateur body builder, although I never competed or cared to.

I hear you about the old eating habits. I don't plan to keep it up, but I was just being honest about why I have only lost a pound or so in the last three days.

It is really really really hard the first few months are the worst. I remember my first few months were the worst I would lay there thinking why did I do this to myself???? It was awful at first but it does get better EVERYONE goes through that just try and push through.

This surgery was by far the best thing I have ever done. I have none of the drawbacks that they talk about (I can eat any type of food (including ice cream and cheesecake), drink carbonated beverages, chug Water, etc). I am on about a 80/20 paleo diet (80% of the time I follow it) and losing weight is a breeze. I am down over 60 lbs in 90 days, and I have yet to start exercising.

I know it's hard rn. I had to stay in the hospital for a week cause I couldn't drink so I say try to drink if you can. Walk walk walk. Gas gets easier as time goes by and you can take gas x. It will get better. I'm almost a year out.

I felt the same exact way the first week after surgery. When I came home I would be holding my stomach every time I went to the bathroom. It was my first surgery so it was very new and definitely never experienced that kind of pain.

The first week I iced my stomach on and off like my surgeon recommended and didn't take the abdominal binder. Learned to sleep on my back. Take the pain meds and don't try to suffer through it. I made that mistake.

At my 2 week follow up I got sent in for fluids at the hospital's infusion center because I had issues getting fluids in. After that I felt so much better! Don't be afraid to call your surgeon is anything feels off. I have bad anxiety and it was nice to hear that everything is okay and expected.

I will be 3 weeks our on Wednesday and I can do more liquids now but I am still struggling with Protein. Baby steps. You got this!!

I guess I never realized how fat I actually was.

Day 0, 47, & 240. Down 105 lbs. Still have not started exercising. Still eating like crap. I need to start hitting the weights again and upping my Protein intake. I am currently losing weight when I am trying not to.

I probably have lost half of my hair, but I had really thick hair to begin with. I have probably taken a Vitamin maybe 10 times, and have thrown up at least half of those times. Even on a full stomach its a gamble. I think I am going to try to start cutting them in half or something.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Daaaaammmmmnnnnnnnnnn.

You look like that without exercising??? I get the weight loss due to caloric deficit, but the overall firmness AND those quads need some explaining, pls! Blessed with good genes, you are. lol.

Lookin' FAB.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
