Pregnancy with band

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone. I am in the researching phase with this procedure and I'm just trying to get as much information as I can. I was wondering how many of you have gone through a pregnancy after having the surgery. I've read that there is no problem with this and that the band is just adjusted to allow you to consume more food during the pregnancy so that you can get enough nutrition for the baby. But I would like to hear from anyone who has had experience with this. Did you have any complications and was there anything unexpected? I have been trying to get pregnant for a while and I know that my weight is part of the problem that I am having getting pregnant. I just don't want anything that would jeopordize a future pregnancy though.

Thanks for any help that you can give me.

Sara

Sara, I got the band in hopes of losing weight to make getting pregnant easier when the time comes. Before my second fill I could eat anything and everything I wanted. If you are to become pregnant they just take the fill out and allow plenty of room and ease for food and nutrition for the baby. My doc also told me they originally called the lap-band the "fertility-band" because between the weight loss and women feeling better about themselves a lot of the original lap banders were getting pregnant. That is why if you are of the baby-makin age they request that you use birth control until you are at a healthy steady weight to carry a baby. My doc told me generally a year and a half out. I hope this info helps and good luck with your research.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
