Hi all,

thinking of getting gastric sleeve surgery. Worried about complications post op and long term. Has anyone had complications as the result of surgery years after the surgery?? I know what potential immediate post op complications to expect but how about long term ??

I'm an RNY patient, but both types get the same messages from our surgeon. Most complications, when they occur, are going to be within the first three or four months post surgery. Complications further out can happen, but they're pretty uncommon. Keep on top of your Vitamins, of course...you can develop deficiencies if you slack off. And some VSG patients (certainly not all) develop GERD. But other than that...

I had the RNY and yes, I did have complications. I experienced internal bleeding one month out. I was hospitalized for a week and had to take a bunch of meds for a few weeks after I was released. They almost had to transfuse me, but thankfully, I missed the cut-off by a hair. I also had to go back on a liquid diet for a few weeks, after just starting the pureed phase. My system still isn't 100% as I developed a lot of intolerance for many foods. But, I'm still happy I had it done. I'm almost down a hundred pounds and no longer have any of the comorbidities I had pre-surgery.

Good luck with your decision making. This is a great community. Everyone here is very honest and helpful, so any further questions you have, just ask! :)

I had the Loop DS surgery which has a sleeved stomach as part of the surgery and they warned me about possible GERD issues in the future, stomach ulcers (because I took NSAIDS, which I haven't taken since my surgery), blood clots, Vitamin or nutrient deficiencies (though this is mostly due to the Loop DS portion), intolerance to certain foods, and incisional hernia (rare, but it happens and a patient who had the sleeve came in while I was in the surgeons office talking about it and was two years out). All these can happen months or even YEARS out of surgery. Just be aware of your own body and if something doesn't feel right call your doctor!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
