Taking Charge! C25K day 1!

Recommended Posts

Sitting at my home computer this morning typing an email to my sales staff, trying to keep them motivated during these very trying and challenging times, I realized I was giving them the advice I need to hear myself. Its been two years since I started this journey and 506 days since my RNY surgery. I'm down 125 pounds and life is flippin fantastic! I have been losing and gaining the same five pounds for five months but I'm ok with that, having a couple of glasses of red wine in the evening is most likely the cause coupled with a lack of any real exercise program - I am active, just not working out - but my life is filled with happiness right now. Fast forward to this morning and it hit me, I'm motivating others but not myself. Today that changes! I laced up my running shoes and started day one of C25K. Running a 5k without stopping has always been a bucket list item and now I am going to do it!

Great job. I used a C25K app a year ago and it really helped.

Good for you ! That's a great motivator, I used it for my first 5k pre surgery and again for my first post op 5k, I see you are in Florida and just want to say if you are near Tampa they have an amazing 5k, I flew down in February and ran the Gasparilla run with my daughter who lives down there. Can't wait to do it again next year ! Keep up the good work

Since the beginning of lockdown in the UK (and the closure of the local pools) I've also started to do Couch to 5K. I'll be running Week 5 Run 2 tomorrow....it feels amazing to do any kind of running without my back, hips and knees hurting. I never imagined I'd ever run, but I'm actually beginning to enjoy it.

I ran my first 10K on Monday...I think I've been taken over by a body-snatching exercise-loving alien....don't know what's wrong with me! 😉

That is awesome @looly! I had to abandon my plans after three weeks as my knees were in pain. I’ve been resting and hoping to try again next week. I went to a running store to get fitted for shoes and they said mine were fine so probably just pain from getting back outside! Well hopefully.... 10k. That is awesome!

I had some knee pain after about the third week of C25K. I bought some elasticated knee supports and they really helped. I don't wear them all the time, but if my knees twinge, then I wear them on the next run - they work a treat!

As for me running 10K, it was by accident really. I planned to run 5K downhill and then phone my other half to come and pick me up. But I felt OK and just started to run back. I walked up the really steep hills and I kept thinking "I'll phone him in a bit", but I was having such a nice time pootling away, listening to music and generally nosying into other peoples' gardens, that I just kept going. Before I knew it, I was home!

I ran 10K again on Sunday, 20 minutes faster than the first time I did it (and I had surgery In August, so I had a break in training). I actually put weight on during lockdown, but I feel fitter than ever!

I could maybe walk a 5k but definitely not run one. I'm OLD! LOL! I've been taking a few 15 minute breaks a couple of times a day and putting on my earbuds and iPod and dancing around the house. Just starting to get back into working out. Want to go to the gym (my membership is free) but I don't want to have to wear a mask there to do cardio. Sounds too difficult to breathe. But there are plenty of things I can do around the house and walk outside when it's not too cold. I'm going to try to incorporate regular exercise back into my life.

You don't look old to me, GradyCat! You look smiley and youthful!

I'm 53 and I only started running in March. I only did it because of lockdown, but now I love it...I'm continually surprised by what my body can do now. You might be surprised too. 😉

I’m halfway through my C25K app as of this week. I only check like every run session to make sure the app is going and it’s not time to walk yet.

Wondering if you are still running? How's it going?

Yes! I am still running and I have been working on increasing speed over time. I did my first official race last weekend and finished the 5k in 28 minutes, which is fast for me. Now I am working to increase distance- my goal is to compete in a half marathon next year. I run on average about 15 miles or so every week, in addition to my daily spin classes.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
