Ling82 21 Posted March 25, 2020 Is it normal to have diarrhea during this liquid phase post op? I’ve had it for about 3 days now, all day long everyday. Just wondering if it’s normal because I’m not eating anything, just liquids. One Protein Shake a day.
AJ Tylo 1,399 Posted March 25, 2020 I would call you doctor! Nothing I have seen here before, but all of us are different. You body is healing and the Protein Shakes may not be setting well
Ling82 21 Posted March 25, 2020 Just called my Dr. He said it can be normal at this stage and to call them back Friday morning.
BriarRose 437 Posted March 25, 2020 I had surgery 10 years ago...so things and Protein Drinks may have changed. I could not tolerate the Protein drinks. I get so ill from anything with any kind of sugar substitute. I sill have to read labels like crazy because flavored yogurts, and any "diet" sweets will make me very very sick. Read labels and see what is in there and try different protein drinks.

So one of those could be the culprit, too - but I'd see what your surgeon has to say. I personally never had diarrhea (always the opposite), but we're all different... Katheryn0303 48 Posted March 26, 2020 I had it every day like you while I was on the liquid phase. As soon as I started the soft foods (14 days out after surgery) it went away just as fast as it came. Hang in there!! It goes away!

I can't compare my own experience because I STILL have issues, but that's due in part to my specific surgery. I did notice I had issues with sucralose though and try to either limit my intake or cut it out altogether because it causes massive stomach issues.
Coexister 114 Posted October 10, 2020 I am so glad you asked this question because I am having the same problem! I am only 3 days post op and woke up to a soiled bed per watery diarrhea. Thank goodness for great mattress protector! This was my 15th surgery and normally after surgeries I am dealing with Constipation not watery diarrhea. So frustrating and I just want it to go away. Seems everything is just washing through.
BriarRose 437 Posted October 10, 2020 I could not tolerate any of the sweetners in the clear Protein drinks or dairy replacement ingredients in the shakes. I still cannot - and I could not before surgery. Try broth and Water for a day or two and see if that helps - but call your surgeon and ask them for advice ! TheMoxieMama 47 Posted October 11, 2020 I'm on day 5 of the post-op liquid diet and I started to have the same experience as you on day 3. I can't do the Premiere Protein Shakes now. But FairLife High Protein(30 grams) and Carnation Lite Essentials shakes (13 grams) work great for me.
