Alcohol a year after bypass

Recommended Posts

we were told we could occasionally have alcohol a year after bypass. I do - but I probably have about three or four glasses of wine a year. I can feel it right away...

Hey, Marine--nice to hear from you, and happy one-year anniversary (more or less).

My surgeon and nutritionist both said alcohol is fine one year out. However, it always going to be calculation as to whether it's worth the (empty) calories vs. the the benefit. Becoming a teetotaler isn't realistic for everyone, but drinking of course needs to be done in moderation. This will be a lifelong balancing act that does't end just because we are in the maintenance phase.

I hope you are doing well!

I am 6 months out and had a skinny margarita a few times and I can feel it right away, and it goes away pretty quickly too.

I find it is not worth the calories for the short lived buzz I get do to gastric bypass.

I also here that folks who have had RNY can end up alcoholics trying to chase that lengthy buzz.

I just make do with the occasional drink.

Anyone have any ideas

I was never told to not drink alcohol..... I keep it to one or two a night on the weekends. One now has me tipsy.... I drank a Lemond drop Saturday night and I felt it at the last sip.

I don't drink beer (don't like it) nor do i drink anything mixed with soda.... (exp: jack and coke) I will drink a glass of wine or a mixer with juice or a margarita.

Everything in moderation.....

I'm out a year and recently started having a few while I'm out singing at night. I've never been a drinker before and I've had a hard time controlling it post op. I blacked out two weeks ago which I've never done before. I was with my guy who I trust and counted myself lucky. I don't remember leaving the bar, walking to the liquor store and doing shots there, or getting a lyft home. It was a total wake up call for me and I'm not going to drink anymore. I don't want to think what could've happened if I hadn't been with my boyfriend. I'd say it's not really worth it but that's just my own personal experience with it.

My surgeon told me no alcohol for two years, and then only when I had no need to drive. Apparently, a bypass makes you capable of exceeding the legal limit with <=1 drink.

My nutritionist told me I am clear to drink in moderation if it is unavoidable (when would it be??) but to keep in mind that it will slow my weightloss and I will get drunk really fast. They said drink at home or somewhere safe the first time to see how it effects me. She also said it can cause dumping because of the sugar content. That said, I had a glass of wine the other night and couldn’t finish it because I got a strong buzz. And not the good kind of buzz. It hit me really fast. It was gone fast too but still! That’s no fun! And not worth the calories or slowing down weightloss.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
