upper body aches two weeks after gastric sleeve

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I'm kind of worried awake at 4:30 because my upper body (chest and back area) are very achy. It almost feels like I have a fever, but I don't. I get chills and very achy when I have a fever. And no, I'm not coughing or sneezing or sore throat so I'm almost positive it's not coronavirus. Has anyone ever felt like this? I've been reading and I just don't know what the problem is. I can drink, but I hate the Protein Shakes. UGH!! I don't feel good. Yesterday I went back to just Protein shakes and Water because I thought I wasn't ready for cottage cheese and applesauce. Please help

Yes you body is healing this same post is all over this site, You wracked your body hard and now it is recovering. Let your body tell you when you can go to other foods. shakes do suck, But you need them. Make your own with Protein powders, The only one i like that is store bought is Core Fitness.

Have you spoken to your doctor? Your chest might be achy from the intubation during surgery. If it hurts right under your ribs, that is where they were doing the surgery, so that is very normal. However, if the discomfort is in your lungs and you feel so uncomfortable that it is waking you up, you might mention it to your doctor or bariatric team. My doctor sent me home with a spirometer to make sure I was taking lots of deep breaths to ward off pneumonia.

At two weeks, I was also allowed to take some Tylenol to help with any aches and pains.

Good luck and I hope you feel better!!!

Yes. I had the body aches too. Also in the center of my chest. I had a heart attack many years ago so I was alarmed at first but they did an EKG and my heart was fine. The pain traveled from the center of my chest all around and into my back. They gave me Tylenol and I was told to take it when I got home. After a few days it was gone, gone, gone.

I found the first few days really difficult. I never expected all the pain I had to endure and the nausea.

Thank you everyone. Spoke with the nurse and told to take some tylenol. That's been helping and it's good to know that it will go away. Just didn't think I would feel like this.

I had the worst left shoulder pain for several days. One night I dreamed I was having surgery on my shoulder because it was so hurting so bad and I felt it in my sleep. Crazy. I’m 17 days post op and it’s all gone now. Thank Goodness.
I hope the Tylenol helps and you feel better!

Thanks Cammy! The Tylenol helped, but I had to go to the emergency room because I really wasn't feeling well again. They gave me potassium and a banana bag (has Vitamins etc.) and sent me home. Now two weeks later I have coronavirus and am even more miserable. I got tested after I lost my sense of taste and smell. Please stay safe and inside!!

Oh wow! What an awful thing to have to go through, especially so soon after surgery! I hope you improve quickly...I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers ❤️

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
