HELP! five days post op (RNY) and my bowels are a mess

Recommended Posts

Okay I managed to make it through the 'green nausea' phase, and the extreme GERD phase, but starting last night the gurgling in my intestines started and I pretty much spent the night in the bathroom with the "floopy poops". What on EARTH could be in me that is causing so much distress? The cramps are so painful...I finally took Immodium last night, but the same thing started up again this evening around 5pm.
Is this normal????

You literally just had your insides cut open and re-routed. It's all normal. If anything seems like you'll end up becoming dehydrated or severe pain, call the doctor for sure.

I think we all get so caught up in what's "normal" we forget we had a major surgery and trauma. I'm guilty too. Seven weeks out and been in your shoes.

Try and remember what your body has been through!

Good luck friend!

thanks - I do have to keep reminding myself - especially because I barely have any surgical pain - but oh my insides! My "big tummy" is growling like a banshee, everything in there must be so confused!

Hang in there, it gets easier!

I had little to no pain at all but man my new stomach had some words with me haha.

Haha do you still have a gall bladder? That may be causing some issues as well as it adjusts.

Yeah I haven't had one in ten years either.

It's just your body adjusting.

I still have some issues in the bathroom and it's been 7 weeks and I'm eating normal food.

You'll figure out and tweak your new norm as you heal.

I love how everything seems so miserable on my insides right now, yet I would TOTALLY fight a wrestler for some mashed potatoes if they were eating them in front of me right now.

I do my one week post op on friday where I have to eat an egg, egg beaters, cottage cheese, or refried Beans as my test...if that goes okay, I get to transition to soft mushy - I pray that it stays down - I really want something other than shakes and Soups. It doesn't help that I'm limited by being a vegetarian, so even my Soup choices were blah...

I was a vegetarian for years... Unfortunately I had to rethink it after being anemic and low on pretty much everything prior to surgery. I'm sure it doable but I had to go back to lean, well sourced meats and fish. Post op I just couldn't get enough Protein. I hate shakes. Like haaaate.

it's been 27 years for me, I have zero desire to even try animal products again - although I do like the new Beyond Burger plant based products. It makes an amazing meatloaf, that I'm going to try making in individual 4oz baking dishes and freezing it. I've suffered from pernicious anemia almost all of my life (unexplained), so I'm used to the wonky blood work. I go for Iron infusions every 6-12 months. Hopefully the RNY won't throw things off TOO much! I'm being vigilant on my Vitamins however!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
