Challenges with Weight Loss during Quarantine?

Recommended Posts

My daughter's school had an exposure to COVID-19/Coronavirus in MA this week, so we were asked to self-quarantine/distance.

I work from home and Boston's schools are out probably until April 27, so I'm guessing we're pretty much locked down in this little city apartment for the duration. My estimate is within the next week the whole country will be in this boat.

While we're still able to get out for walks (maintaining social distancing) I did cancel my rowing classes in order not to be patient zero. (And, frankly, to avoid exposure.)

I was able to lay in supplies of most of the things I currently eat on my plan, but I am definitely finding myself at the top end of my available calories every day. I'm not sure if it's stress eating, or being less busy, or what. And of course, I'll have to be leaning in more on non-perishables as this continues, so that may be worse.

I know diabetes and obesity are both complicating factors for outcomes if infected, as well as some other pre-existing conditions that often accompany high weight. I don't suffer from those, but I'm wondering if those who do are concerned.

How are you all coping with staying on plan, keeping active, and keeping stress low during this challenge?

I’m in GA and I have to go back to work on Tuesday—I was hoping they would have shut down shop while I was out recovering from the sleeve surgery 😂

I’m in the purée phase now so I went out and stocked up on creamy Soups, Protein Powder, Refried Beans and things like that.

I’ve been walking around the house and driveway for exercise, but think I overdid it the past couple of days so have not done much of anything today. I’m lucky that my family and I are all onboard with staying home, the kids are home for at least two weeks and keeping my mom healthy is most important as she has diabetes. We are doing pick up from stores and not going into them. And social distancing for sure! I saw in the news that the youngsters—lol—I’m 40 - so those younger generations are not taking heed and still filling up the bars and clubs this wekend. Lord, I hope this virus makes it out of the USA soon.

They just ordered all bars and restaurants closed for in-dining in this state because, well, some folk are just plain hardheaded. I took a short pre op walk today -- haven't been to the gym in weeks getting the prepped and ready for surgery. So just waiting...waiting....waiting....on Wednesday....

I have enough to get me thru the soft food phase.

No, food is not issue, plenty of options for pre/post Bariatric people for sure, what is of short supply is toilet paper, hand disinfectant cleaners and other basic cleaning supplies. Just went to Sam's this early AM and not a single roll of toilet paper was available although a supply was on it's way I was told.

I'm long past the shake days, but I loaded up on:

Protein Shakes

Isopure Protein Water

Case of Built Bars

Healthy Choice Power Bowls

Carba-Nada Pasta

Unsweetened almond milk

Frozen fruit to make into smoothies

Also, I learned eggs can last a YEAR in the fridge.

I stashed away a few groceries I've gotten for Wednesday and beyond when I'm allowed solids and raw stuff again (crisp bread, crackers, frozen spinach etc.) and realized that my pantry always looks like I'm preparing for catastrophe, lol.

Rice, udon, mie, edamame Pasta, Tomato sauce in glasses, packets of crackers, tea, coffee, nut butters, soy milk, Protein Bars, cocoa, erythrith, powders, muesli etc. - if I had a bigger freezer it would be stuffed with way more frozen fruits and vegetables as well.

I usually buy stuff with long shelf lives in bulk when it's on sale or special online offer.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
