First Bite Syndrome

Recommended Posts

I know there are threads on here about this but does anyone know what causes it? Does it mean you are too tight? Is it dangerous to your band? I could not find this answer in any of the threads on this topic.

Thanks!

First bite syndrome doesn't have anything to do w/being too tight. That happened to me before I even had my first fill (if I am remembering correctly).

Basically, you take a bite of something and then feel full. I don't know why it would be dangerous.

Thanks for your answers guys. I don't think first bite syndrome is being full after just one bite - I think it is feeling some pain after the first bite or two that goes away after a few minutes. Can anyone shed some light on this?

Karen, yes, it is feeling full right after the first bite. Sometimes it just take a few minutes to pass. In my case, I usually PB. Last night during dinner I had a wonderful steak tostado salad. I had to PB twice, one on my margarita, the other some solid food first then I was able to consume almost the entire salad. If warm liquids help you then I would start with that. While PB is nasty, that is typically how I address first bite syndrome then I am fine. Depends on your body. Good luck.

I always thought that first bite syndrome is when you are first learning how to eat with the band and you accidentally take a larger than proper bite size and it causes you pain, or that stuck feeling. Another time it happens is when you allow yourself to become too hungry and accidentally swallow your first bite without chewing well enough and get that golf ball feeling. I guess it means different things to different people.

The way I understand first bite syndrome.

After the first bite or two, some people experience pain, almost like the sensation when you are about to PB. Some feel this pain has something to do with spasms of the esophagus or it could be a mental thing.

The suggestions I've read to over come this are: Have a glass of wine or hot liquid before eating to relax everything. Take one or two tiny tiny bites, chewed to nothing and then wait about 3-5 minutes before proceeding with the meal. I guess once you get past that initial discomfort you can eat normally.

Candle - thank you so much for your answer. I was wondering mainly what caused it and also if it meant I was too tight. I guess I have my answers!!

Thanks

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
