Tough Time with Liquid Diet

Recommended Posts

I am only a few days post op but I am having trouble with the liquid diet. I seem to still want to eat more and I really want to eat solid food/chew or crunch on something. I don’t want to move to the next phase too fast but also don’t know how long I can do liquids only for. Any advice?

Don't advance to the next stage unless your medical team has given you the go ahead to.

Are you able to distract yourself doing other things...I find keeping hands and mind busy distracts me from cravngs or feeling hungry.

Are you getting plenty of no calories fluids...water or your preferred drink? What liquid drinks are you consuming? Do they have a high Protein content?

I also had surgery on 3/10/20 and can relate to missing being able to chew foods. So far what's been helping are popsicles. Right now, they're the firmest thing we are allowed post-op and I'm getting a lot of satisfaction being able to bite into them. I agree with Hop_Scotch about not advancing to the next stage until they give us the go ahead. I don't know about you but I'm still very sore and sensitive and while I crave being able to chew on something, we would be doing more damage to ourselves if we try to speed up the process. They should have given you some sort of paperwork or something that tells you when you can move to the puree stage. For me its after 2 weeks so on March 24.

DO NOT ADVANCE TILL YOUR BODY AND YOUR DOCTOR TELL YOU TO! This is a mind game that we all have been thru, I actually chewed gum after surgery -

Be really careful and if you go to fast to the next stage going to be hell and painful. I think you mind is messing with you, Walk the dog, Watch a movie, Get distracted! Nice thing is you are not hungry, Try making yourself some Home made broths or bases, Keep you busy and then you get to eat them.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
