Caffeine post op

Recommended Posts

My nutritionist told me I should stay clear of caffeine after my surgery because while I’m healing it will cause extreme stomach pain. How long after surgery did you wait to have caffeine again? I don’t have tons but like one cup of coffee. Even Decaf would be fine but even decaf has some caffeine.

I was a 3-4 cup a day drinker before surgery, but I made the switch to Decaf prior, just so I wouldn't go through caffeine withdrawal. Lo and behold, my taste changed and I don't even like coffee any more.

Honestly, without caffeine and sugar, my energy levels are so consistent throughout the day. I don't need a "wake up" cup, and I never have the afternoon slump. I'll never go back, because I feel so much better without it .... and because it just doesn't taste the same anymore.

I was just the opposite. I never drank coffee before surgery but find that I now really enjoy it and now have 2-3 cups a day. I take it with skim milk and artificial sweetener. I didn't start drinking coffee until about seven months after surgery.

I did Decaf for the first 6 weeks, then resumed my regular Columbian Supreme. Never a problem.

like someone else said, surgeons seem to be all across the board on this question. Some say you can drink it right away, others say never drink it again. Some say it's OK after a certain amount of time, and some say just limit it to one cup a day.

that said, I think I could drink Decaf pretty quickly (maybe after the first three or four weeks?), but I had to wait six months to drink the real thing.

I managed to get off of it for a few weeks and felt pretty dead. I started with maybe 1/3 cup three weeks after surgery and now 1.5 years out, I have 1 cup a day.

Me too! I never liked coffee but for some reason I tried a sip with Splenda in it about a year after surgery and loved it. I now have to limit myself to 2 or 3 cups in the morning or I'd be chuggin' all day.

I waited for about three months, and then I didn't do coffee, I did crystal light energy (very low caffeine).

It's a nice boost and you get your Water intake to boot...win win! 😁

I have a bit of caffeine free coffee occasionally, and caffeine free ice tea with lemon daily.

I’ve been having 1/2 cup of coffee since day 2 after surgery. I could drink a whole cup or two prior to surgery, but I don’t crave it like I did before surgery so I drink my cup until my body craves Water which is about half way done. It has not hurt me, in fact it seems to soothe my tummy first thing in the morning and get things going as far as BM. My dr and nut did not take caffeine off the table as it were.

I started with one cup of Decaf at week 3 and went to regular coffee at week 6. No problems at all!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
