When to transition from liquids to soft foods

Recommended Posts

I notice a lot of people are on liquids for 2-3 weeks. However my doctor said I should be on liquids for only 1 week, then 1 week of mushy foods then I can start having normal food. Tomorrow marks the one week mark. When do I know I’m ready to transition.

Your doctor knows the details of your particular case. I would say that you should follow your doctor's advice.

My doctors office has one week of liquid foods, then one week of pureed, and then two weeks soft food, then basic general diet with some exceptions (no starches, no stringy fruits or veggies, no lettuce, no berries, etc.). Literally every doc office seems to be different so just follow what yours says. For my doc office the only reason people go over the set week(s) is if they can't tolerate the next stage. Then they stay a couple more days on it before trying to move up a stage again. Hope this helps...

Just be careful and take the transisition slowly, Your body knows more then your doctor does when it is ready you will realize it. No two of us are the same so slowly transition thru the phases, You may need a few more days or maybe your ready to go. Slow and Steady wins the race.

Trust me go to fast and you will pay for it! Welcome and Congrads

I am Clear Liquids one week. Full liquids for week two and then week three I can start purée. I would def listen to your dr and your body. I tried out milk yesterday because I was hungry one week post op. It didn’t go well. I experienced dumping syndrome and while it did only last 30-45 minutes, it scared me. So I know I need more time before trying that again.

Yes - this is a transition, rather than a step change (liquids only, then next week no liquids and just mushies). Try new things one at a time to check for your tolerance to it - if it goes well, then great, add that item to your menu and continue trying new things. If it doesn't, try something else and try that item again in a couple of weeks.

Our program gave us the option to transition between the liquids, mushes and soft things as we could tolerate them, and go back and forth as needed (scrambled eggs, yogurt and pureed thing in the hospital). You usually wind up with a blend of things on the menu for a while as most Protein will still come from shakes as that is where you can get the volume needed, but the stomach usually appreciates the "physical therapy" of working on small amounts of the more solid things.

Definitely follow your doctor's direction and what your body will tolerate. My doctor and nutritionist prescribe to the 2-2-2 Plan; 2 weeks Full Liquids, 2 weeks pureed Foods; 2 weeks Soft Foods. My RNY revision surgery was Feb 27 and my first post op appointment was yesterday. I received the green light to transition to Pureed Foods at end of the week. I had Lap Band surgery in 2005, and I know I made some mistakes and took some liberties following the post op diet, paid for it. I am determined this time to follow the program to avoid the pain and discomfort pushing the diet calendar to get to mainstream foods.

My nutritionist puts us on 2 weeks liquid then onto soft foods. But I will tell you what my doctor told me: just because you can start the soft foods doesn’t mean you have to. If you try it and your body can’t handle it, it’s one to be on the liquid diet longer

I'm into the second week of pureed foods, and have been trying some soft foods with some texture. I have tried eggs twice and it has been a disaster both times. Turkey Chili pulsed a couple times in blender was great. I have been trying 1-2 soft meals a day, with pureed or liquid in between. Straight pureed after a week was really starting to get depressing. We can always take a step back if we are intolerant to soft food choices.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
